What *IS* the headliner?
I've been reading all this discussion on the Headliner, probably dozens of threads now, yet everyone seems to know what it is... except me. I am picking my car up today and I really want to check for this problem since it seems to be a common one. Thanks!
Sit in the driver seat. Look up.
It's your "roof". Cars with this problem will be noted by a gap between the "inside roof" and the moonroof sliding door. These two should touch with no gaps.

Ok... and do newer cars have this problem? I thought it was one Acura wasn't aware of but you distinctly said "cars with this problem" so it leads me to believe that it may not be an issue on newer ones. Thanks again.
my car is a month old and had this problem, told the dealer, they fixed it, i can have the moonroof open going 100MPH and there is NO gap even from the wind where the headliner is at the back opening of the moon roof
I do not know if they have corrected it. I would guess No, since many people have brought them back to the Dealers and their fix is not working...so I guess no TSB has been issued. One would hope that being May - the new cars have all these known kinks worked out...

So tonight, when I go to pick my car up, even if the headliner isn't falling, I will be able to tell if it will based upon a gap being present? If so, I guess I will check for it and tell my dealer that I'll probably be coming in for service in the near future
The best way to inspect the headliner for drooping is to open the sunroof all the way, stand outside the car and look at the rear edge of the sunroof. If the headliner is properly attached, you will not see any space between it and the sunroof. There is a spring steel strip running across the roof (left to right) to which the headliner attaches by 3 velcro strips. The top of the velcro strip, glued to the metal strip, is the piece that comes loose.

Well, hard to say what it will do tomorrow or the next day...but yes, poke your head in the car and look up towards the rear of the moon roof (with shade closed) - you should not see any gap (I could probably fit a pencil between mine before I fixed it) Some cars they have actually fallen down. One of the ones on the lot when I was shopping the whole thing was hanging down - had to be at least 6-8 inches.
I suspect I was so excited to be getting the car I over looked it.
- easy to fix tho.

To GaleForce:
Thanks for asking this, and good luck with your new TL. I too had been seeing all the posts about the headliners, and had even done searches through old threads, and while that gave me an idea of what to look for, it was only a vague idea. So thanks for asking this question.
And to all who answered it:
Thanks for such descriptive answers. I think so far my headliner is OK, but based on your answers I can now really check the next time I am at the car, and then I'll know for sure.
This forum is great, as are all the helpful people who post regularly!

GaleForce,
If you ask your dealer about this, they will say they never heard of it.
Check out one of their car in the showroom, then they will say it's normal, all 04TL will have this drop-down headliner. It's matter of time it will drop, and it will fall again after fixing it.
:o
Where is the photo... we had one before...
