Weird down shifting auto tranny

This just might be me being over sensitive, but I noticed that some times when my car down shifts it’s kind of a ruff down shift. So I am doing 60 mph and apply the break and when the car gets close to around 40 45 the tranny shift down real fast. It almost feels like some one tapped on the break for like a half second. Is anyone else feeling this or is it just me?

I've had the same thing happen, but only twice, when decelerating heading off the interstate on an offramp. Weird.

I think you are experiencing "grade logic" that initiates a downshift to aid in deceleration based on a number of factors including the "Grade" of level orientation of the car.

Try coasting down a hill and lightly apply brakes and wait for the tranny to kick down.

May be the same thing

I have when doing a constant speed around 30-35 a surging type sensation. In the old days this might have been due to the carburator. It went away with the invention of fuel injection. But I feel the same sensations with the TL.. My service advisor felt it too but could only send the complaint up the ladder to technical aid at corp. I thought it had to do with the down and up shifting at the lower speeds as well. It just doesn't feel like a normal thing though. If enough of us complain about it to our dealers, then the engineers will get involved and find the solution.

bruce - don't know what your problem is but it doesn't appear to have ANYTING in common with this thread. The thread is about downshifting tranny when SLOWING down. This downshifting is by design and ONLY occurs when slowing down (and foot on brake by the way). It does not occur when holding a constant (even at the slower speeds) speed. I personally like the downshift and it is similar to my prior CLK55's automatic in that is "senses" the opportunity and "helps" the car by downshifting where it believes to be beneficial. Only real problem with the CLK55 was on tight slow road courses. However, it went away when you turn of the traction control on that car. I'll try turning off the traction control on my car next time I take it out and let you guys know if it goes away.

I had a '94 Integra that did the same thing when cornering from time to time. I also testdrove a '00 TL about a year ago and it did the same thing. Also the '03 RSX I testdrove after the '00 TL did it.
And a while back I read a review on the TL that mentioned this very thing.

As someone else mentioned, I think it is the grade logic. Kind of like air brakes on a jet, it aids in slowing the vehicle down.

Similarly, Grade Logic also dictates not to upshift aggressivly going up a hill to hold a lower gear for power.

Yeah the downshift is nice on a hard stop, it really slows down the car. I hard stop a lot with these piss @$$ atlanta drivers and it's always kicking in.
