Use mild detergent, nothing too abrasive. Also, make sure that the alternater and battery terminals don't get wet! BTW, you might get better advice in the "Wash & Wax" section. Hope this helps!

Probably going to get locked or moved, but I usually just use a soft cloth with some kind of glass or generic cleaner on it. It works pretty well. There are ways that you can tape off sensitive areas of your engine and spray it with a hose (so I've heard) but I don't have the balls nor the inclination to try it. Also, nice little detailer's trick... WD40 helps to cut away grime and it leaves a brand new "wet" looking shine on pieces under the hood
