VTEC Question
wow, first time hearing about the LED vtec indicator.
that's just idiotic... they probably got a shift light and "custom installed" it.
it's a lil redundant to have a vtec indicator on the dash... the sound itself lets you and everyone around you know that it's hauling ass.

Why would anyone want or need that? It's like advertising it with a sticker. A "VTEC" sticker (or in this case light) might have been cool a decade ago. In the days of VVT-i and VANOS and tons of other variable valve timing acronyms, VTEC isn't anything special. I'm glad it's there, but my engine says "3.2 VTEC" and that's good enough for me.
Rice, anyone?

Yah, but I think it would be cool to half a Vtec light go on, not neccasarily any other bells and whistles. One can obviously tell, but being the driver I would want to know exactly what was going on with my engine. If the car doesnt have it, I am not putting one in, but I would have liked to see a light in the Tack that went on when Vteck was engaged, or at least a color change at the point where the Tach gauge is at an RPM in Vtec.

Perhaps an audible VTEC indicator would work well. Something like this:
VTEC Engaged!
That would remove all doubt, and it's definitely not 'ricey'.

some people install the light for boost and A/F ratio reasons...
but i do think it would be kinda cool if it blended in with the dash, just one small LED....but not a humungus shift light

Maybe an audible warning like this one is in order: VTEC alert
haha. It would be nice if there was a factory installed light in the tac section. The type of back lit icon, like for the VSA or low fuel. Nothing to flashy. BTW, it would be pretty simple to record that sound onto a digital audio recorder from radio shack and wire the play button through a relay and off the solenoid, and then have it either play from seperate speakers or the car speaker. I have made these modified recorders for sound effects for halloween setups. My other commonly visited place is halloweenforum. Halloween, girls, cars, and big screen tvs, ahh.
Err because you spend all of 5 seconds at a time in VTEC? Unless you're well into the triple digit speeds, or holding the RPMs way high, VTEC is only working for seconds until the transmission shifts. Any kind of indicator would be pointless.
VTEC isn't like a turbocharger... it's just all the lag, none of the power.

Still, it would be cool. If i had the option of a light going on in the Tach, id jump on it. After 150 MPH your navi should display go all black and flash warning on the screen, just for kicks.

It just goes to show that Honda knows engines.
Too bad VTEC in our cars is virtually useless except for the cool sound.

When VTEC is engaged you are constantly getting more power but less milage then if you werent in Vtec, no matter what the RPM, correct? If this is correct it should engage during hard acceleration too. The Magnum V8 engages at high speeds and high accel, but not when its not needed. But it isnt only after a certain RPM, the Vtec should do this too.

And fuel economy isn't a primary concern on our VTEC; VTEC-E is the fuel efficient version.

The TLs vtec is nice, and I now understand it wouldnt work on throttle response. In addition, this is SOHC, but it still has 2 cams, one on the left one on the right. What was to gain by using sohc over dohc?

VTEC is by far not useless. Power wise, you are gaining a lot. It is just spread across the board instead of a sudden jump. I think the most they could get out of the J-series 3.2L engine without VTEC was 210hp (in the Legend).
If there are two engines, identical except for VTEC, the VTEC version will get slightly better mileage because less fuel is wasted inside the cylinder on the intake stroke. Take the 2004 3.5RL and the 2005RL for example. Both engines are the J35, but the 2005 has VTEC. In terms of sheer POWER, the second engine has 75hp more (i think 65% of that is due to the separate cam in VTEC), and the 2004 is rated at 18/24, whereas the 2005 is rated at 18/26 mpg.
I agree, DOHC VTEC is far superior. I don't know what their reasoning is for not using it on the V6's is.
