Nope no diff at all its just electronic doesn't change anything. Tiptronic just lets u hold ur gears longer for spirited driving and lets control shifts but doesn't let u downshift at higher speeds to avoid redlining the engine.

at vs triptronic - let me give you an example, just for kicks

2008 at TL vs 2005 at TL using SS
the winner? 2005 by several car lengths...HAHA ME!
head to head w/o SS - i pulled by a TINY bit, but other than that was a head to head race...

^ the same on tranny life; however, you might finding yourself pushing a little harder with the SS...

its the 2nd and 3rd gear clutches that are the weak point in the trans
Using SS wont shorten the fluid or trans life- that stuff is going to wear out whether you drive it like grandma or think you are RacerX
High rpm torque loads will put extra wear on it~

Watch the downshifts!!!- as in DONT!!!- unless you need to be in a lower gear for a corner- leave the trans alone-
Use the BRAKES for slowing the car- they are cheaper and easy to relplace
Have all the fun you want upshifting with SS
Consult the owner book for the speed limits for up or downshift
Understand SS before using it

Some years will shift from 1 to 2 in SS for you- others do not, so be careful getting in parking lot after playing, or you rev out 1st gear without thinking

I believe every year of the 3rd gen will shift from 1-2 for you. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Ya he mean don't downshit more then 1 gear when driving fast. And when ur slowing down don't touch the shifter, and downshift, the car will downshift by its self when ur coming to a stop. 1st gear u should change at 15, 2:25, 3:35, 4:45, 5:50 and ya just leave it in 5 gear while cruising. Idk if u can shift 5 to 4 when ur rpm or speed is that high.

i know in the 07 type s you can control when the car shifts from 1 to 2...

u can also downshift to 1st from 2nd but i dont think thats really good for the car...

but it sounds good if u have an exhaust or intake...

and yes u can go from 5th gear to 3rd just as long as ur not going too fast...

also if ur in too high of a gear...the car will auto shift down from 4th to 3rd if it feels necessary such as going up a hill or something

wish they had a paddle shifter mod to make them slightly bigger...

you guys need to read the owner manual!!!!!-
the system does not do what you are saying!
and the SS fun is running it up in the rpm- not shifting every 10 mph- what a joke-
if trying to gain gas mileage, let the D5 do its thing instead!

you can drop from 5th to 3rd at about 96 MPH iirc- its listed in the book the maximum speed to upshift and downshift in each gear

gen2 have the 1-2 does it for you in SS, later years do not- you control all the gears
It WILL downshift to 1st when below 15 mph for you when getting off the freeway
If in SS, it will NOT downshift on a hill for you as stated above- only if you are in D5

Mine does as well....'06. It'll automatically upshift from 1st - 2nd......after that shifts are manual input only. It also will not allow 2nd - 1st downshift unless car is stopped. The '08 TL-S loaner would allow a manual downshift from 2-1 if rpm's and speed were fairly low?

My '06 can't be the only haunted 3G TL that auto-upshifts from 1st-2nd? Mine will definitely NOT manual shift from 2nd-1st unless almost at a complete stop(way less than 15mph). And before anyone jumps to any conclusions....a manual valve body style automatic is not rocket science, regardless whether electronically or hydraulically controlled

3G TLs for the '04-'06 will also upshift automatically from 1st to 2nd while in SS mode.

I leave my 5AT in auto mode when I don't need to build RPM since the engine electronics likely have a better fuel efficiency map than my brain.

I took a video...hopefully you can see the 4 go to 3 due to the incline of the hill...and NO i did not downshift on my own...

my left hand was taking the video and my right hand on the steering wheel...

took it with my phone and in the sun, not great quality, but i tried...not a video guru...

hope this clears it up

and 01TL4TL, you cant go from 5th to third at 96, atleast in mine you cant.
when i try anything above 80, it wont go into third for me. but everything else you said im pretty sure is right

The system will not let the engine bog out which is why it will downshift on its own in SS mode. It also will go into 1st automatically if you come to a stop... At least my tl-s does. My will also not let me go in to say 5th at like 20.

the car wont let you do anything to it that will hurt it...

if you keep gunning in 1st it will cut out...meaning limit the rpm's

if the engine is in too high of a gear, it will drop a gear or two...whatever it deems necessary...

and in terms of going to 3rd at 96...im not sure the exact but i have hit 110 in 3rd but i started in 1st...2nd and then 3rd

if i am going 75 in 5th gear, i have dropped to 3rd for a little extra pick and quickly shifted to 4th...

if your going too fast and you tap the stick down, it will blink letting you know you cant go into a lower gear until you slow down...

its no 6 spd manual, but it is better than a regular auto...

My sales person told me that that the 1-2 shift won't happen automatically if you are at wide-open-throttle (WOT); however, it will perform the shift once you let a little pressure off the gas pedal. I tried this once a year ago and sure enough the tranny held until I manually shifted to 2. I can't vouch for 2004-2005 models, but this does work on the 2006- I suspect it holds true for the earlier models as well.
