VIN number question

What is the portion of the VIN number I should be looking at? The last 5 digits? What does this number mean?

Also is it valid to compare VIN number from Canadian and US dealrships?

The last 6 digits of the VIN is the serial number. Canadian vins start with 8XXXXX, and US vins start with 0XXXXX
