VA law for Headlights

Since everyone on here has been talking about clearing headlights, I figured I would ask my question....
I have searched the forums, because I know that a member posted pics of his car like this, and I have searched the VDOT website for the laws....

A member on here had cleared his headlights, yet left a small patch of amber to be legal... I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not it is required by VA law to have any amber in the headlight....

Also, does anyone know the member that did this to their car?

Thanks in advance for the help....

You can try here. I tried poking around a bit, but couldnt really find specifics regarding the matter at hand. I think with virginia they'll be happy as long as you have a turn signal period...

how many people have gotten pulled over or sited for not having amber lights... i feel that it is something that can be easily overlooked by someone who is not familiar with the car.. some people might think that the car comes like that.. people that have cleared their lights have done a great job.. it dosn't look aftermarket to me which is good bc it would draw attention.

That was kind of my thoughts as well... I just didn't want to ge hassled by the man if I can help it.... It should look good with the tint I am getting....

Lee- yeah man, I looked all over that stuff and couldnt find anything specific. I'm kinda thinking that if I didn't find anything, maybe there isnt a code setup for amber lights.....

I suggest doing some serious homework before even thinking about it. Clearing your headlights in VA could turn into an inspection nightmare, especially if you plan on keeping your car a few years.

Let us know what you find.

I am unsure, but i don't really see a problem especially if you were to put in the yellow blinking lights... if a cop pulls you over (which i don't see why) tell him you bought the car like that... i am unsure about VA, but here in PA. i think as long as you have the different bulbs i don't see a prolbem.

OK, heres what I got so far... I called a shop that I know and my guy said that the front turn signal must either BE amber or reflect amber. So one way or another, there needs to be some form of amber.

Anyone ever changed the bulbs for the turn signals? Is it possible or does it defeat the purpose....

Maybe I should just leave a small section that is amber and clear the rest.....

He said "bring it by when your inspection is due and we will see what we can do..." lol

Here's the link to what the safety inspection in Virginia requires. Color of lights is under item 6. Item 7 notes that the lens color for the turn indicators is an inspection item. If your lens isn't yellow, I would expect that depending on the inspector, you might run into problems. Whatever you do, don't go to Main Street Shell in Fairfax. They're notorious for failing people for chickenshit things that could easily be fixed on the spot for no or minimal charge, such as a misaimed headlight.

I cleared my signals out on my last Saab 9-3 SE Vert and it didn't change the functionality of the signals at all, and a friend of mine cleared his signals on his 330i with no problems.

I think it provides a clean look.

None of my friends have cleared them on the TL yet and neither have I.

Hey Jeff, just get an LED that blinks Amber for turn signals. I got mine off ebay from this vendor www.v-leds.com

I got the 24 LED and the resistor so it blinks at the right rate

Go with silverstars made by Sylvania. The have a silver finish on the outside of the bulb and flash amber. The are direct replacements of the stock bulbs so there's no need for resistors or anything like that. And from what I read on that site, it doesn't specify a lens color. I am sure if you ask an inspection center, they will tell you what color it supposed to be.

You wouldn't happen to know a model number or size would you??

7443 for the 3rd Gen turn signal. I have a 2nd Gen so I am not sure if the turn signal and the parking light are the same bulb, but I know for sure they are both 7443. Check here. www.autolumination.com is also a great site to get bulbs from.

xtin, jmb...

Who in the NoVA area clears TL headlights? I'm on the fence as well, but would like a source should I go that route.

I can do all kinds of mod work, but baking my headlights is not in my game plan.

Hey Kristen...
Do these LED's have the built in resisitor? or did you buy the $10 splice in resistors as well?

I dont know of any LEDS with built in resistors. I bought the $10 set.

I can't say that I've ever seen LEDs with built in resistors...but if anyone knows where you can get them, let me know. That would be nice.

There arent any with built in. You have to buy the resistors which means splicing in to the existing wires..... I'm hesitant about thagt.... It may just be worth it to get the chrome bulbs instead of leds

That was the easiest route for me. And I've gotten quite a few compliments on them. I was surprised because people don't really notice turn signal bulbs, but they say the silverstars look good.

I agree with you.. if the resisters were built into the bulb that would be .... but splicing into the wires is not something i wanna do

Yeah... I get it now. The issue is heat. If they built resistors into the LEDs, they would get hot.
-and it would defeat one of the key purposes of LEDs... More light at a lower power draw. The resistors increase the draw.

Resistors would decrease current to the LED's.

Are you talking about the rainbow looking ones? Those are the only ones I can find.

They are the Sylvania Silverstars but they do seem to have a blueish tint on the outside of the bulb during the day.

I opted for some bulbs suggested by JP. They are silver all over. Install pending.

I believe that JP and I have the same ones. Of course I copied him though, not the other way around.
