used 3G TL vs NEW TSX
used 3G TL vs NEW TSX
what do you all think? I have an 07 MDX as a main family car. my wife drives that. I have a two seat roadster in the garage for the weekend.
i'm looking for a DD to commute to work in - i drive 10 miles each way - i am REALLy clsoe to my job. I'd also use whatever I buy as a backup/secondary family car for times when we don't need the size of the MDX and want to cruise in a sedan.
I had a new TSX as a loaner when the MDX was in for service and I liked it. a tad anemic on pwoer, but if you had to punch it, and revved the stink out of it, it did move fast "enough". it was suprisingly nice inside to me. on part wiht a 3G TL in size. in fact, I think it is actually just a smidgen BIGGER in the rear seat - as far as size across the back/width - than the 3G TL.
i woudl buy a base auto or 6 speed. i can get one for $26k for an 09.
I can also look for a slightly used 3G TL. I looked at the TL-S and while I like the sporty nature of it - since I have a sports car in the garage, I really don't know if the extra money that the dealers want for used type S is well spent for *ME*. I'd like to drive it - but honestly, I can make due with a more "modest" car to DD in and just enjoy my roadster. (my roadster is a Porsche Boxster).
so if I got a TL, I'd likely look for an 06-07 CPO. one thing - I HATE the 06 steering wheel - that four spoke thing makes me GAG. call it petty, but i just plain hate it - and I HATE those blue gauges. they look like they are out of the 80s..... i like the 07-08 TL gauges. more modern looking.
so if I got a TL, I'd want to get an 07 - to get the better gauges, newer styled lights, etc. prices on a used CPO 07 w/out nav are in the high 20s...lke 28-29k... for cars with 15-30k miles on them.
part of me thinks it's a better overall car to ge tthe 3G TL as it has the V6.
part of methings it's better to get a brand new car - for slightly less - as it will overall last me longer. whatever I get, i'd like it to last me a while. i ekpt my last daily driver for about 100k miles. i paid if off, then drove it several years w/no payment which was nice.
i know this is the TL forum, so you are all "slightly" biased toward a TL, but I know a lot of people who have gone form 3G TLs to 09 TSXs and liked them.
i still get tempted to get the 07-08 TL-S but the dumb dealers are on crack and want over 30k for a used 08 that has 15-20 miles on them...when i KNOW that they sold these new in 08 for 32k + TTL b/c I almost bought one and have TWO dealers make WRITTEN offers at tha tprice...so how they think they can get the same fo ra new one is beyond me.
what is a better built more reliable vehicle? I have heard stories of TLs with rattles up the wazoo that drive owners crazy. I knmow the TL is assembled JERE in the US and the TSX is assembled in Japan. i have heard that teh cars made in Japan are less prone to issues - like the RL which is built 100% in japan....
is there any consensus as to whethe ra 4cy or 6 cyl will last longer?
years ago, I had a 1999 Prelude SH - I drove that car from new, to about 60k miles, and I FLOGGED that thing daily - redlined her every shift...and it never let me down. what a fun car! i kinda think the new TSX is sort of like my old prelude, only with a nicer interior.

TL does have rattles. Lots of them. I have a 08 TL-S with 8k miles on it, passenger a-pilar rattles, by the seat belt rattles, one in the steering column to. It's only over very rough pavement, but it's still annoying. That said, it still performs very well. The dealers around here are raping on the used 08 TL-S as well. I've seen 2 of them in the $30-$32k range with 15k + miles on them. I only paid $33k for mine brand new last July, so they are dreaming asking low $30's used. If you do get a TL, I'd stay in the 07+, those models use a modified RL tranny, so hopefully they aren't as pitiful as the 04-06 TL trannys.
The major downside to the TSX is what you mentioned, power. If you rev it high, it does ok, but under most normal driving conditions it leaves something to be desired. It's also a bit small, but you have another ride to do your hauling if necessary.
In your case, I'd probably go with the TSX. It's new, full warranty, and will get better MPG's for a daily driver in the city than a TL will.
