Smile Unable to Resist the Urge to Mod

Hey Everyone,

Picked up my '05 a little over two years ago and about a week after I bought it I found this forum and have been visiting off and on ever since.

First of all I want to say thanks to everyone for the loads of great mod ideas. When I first got my TL I told myself, "There is no need to mod this car... it's beautiful". Unfortunately during the coarse of reading all the threads these little mods crawled inside my brain and would not be silenced.

The first of these was the Illuminated Door Sills. I decided to mod my stock sills so I got out my handy dremel bought some LEDs on ebay and went to town. I think they came out pretty good (Pictures Below).

Doing the sills was one thing, next I got the idea in my head to do a carpc project. I was able to fight it that is until 4 days ago. Bored at work I started looking through all the carpc threads and decided it must be done. Today I took my first step by buying a Dynamix 816 touch screen 8.4" and thus the journey continues...

Anyway I just wanted to say hello and thanks.

The LEDs I bought were dual color so they can light up red as well.

Few hot spots but over all I am very pleased with my work.

No, I didn't think to take any pictures while I was working on the door sills.

Here is a very short list of the steps I took though... maybe it will help
  • Seperated the aluminum from the plastic base
  • Cut out all the letters with my dremel (make sure to put some tape over the whole surface it will help minimize damage in case you slip while cutting).
  • Cut a piece of plexi glass to put behind the letters
  • Spray painted the bottom side of the plexi glass white so it would look good during the day as well as spread the light better.
  • Ground down the LEDs plastic casing so that they would be flat and not take up alot of space.
  • Wired the LEDs around the edge of the plexi glass pointing inward.
  • Cut a hole in the sills plastic base so the plexi glass and LEDs would fit when everything was put back together.

While I'm doing my carpc I will take the sills off and snap some pictures of the under side.

I love the concept of a CarPC. Not sure if I'll ever get to it (I've got a matching HP netbook just for the TL), but a fun project nonetheless.

Love the door sills! Great work. Great work indeed.
