Two Extended Warranty questions

1) What's the best price these days?

2) Do you think it's worth getting?

1) I paid around 1400 for 7 yr/100k. Could have probably asked for less but they gave me such a great deal on the car that I wasn't looking to be a pain in the ass

2) Based on past experiences that I have had (Chevy Blazer and Saturn SC2), both ext warranties paid for themselves twice over. Granted, maybe I won't ever need to use it for the Acura, but I plan on using their AAA-like mapping services to make up for the price difference. There are other threads on this subject that you can search for. To the best of my knowledge, most people still preferred AAA; however, my feeling is that with the techie cars today, there's more opportunity for something to go wrong the longer you own them.

I took delivery and paid about the same for the ext. warranty. $1,400 is a steal just for the peace of mind it gives you and the private sale resale value when a hot rod like this has full-boat coverage til' 100K. You dun real good!!!

Huh !!!!

1400 for 3 years 50 K!!!!

You get 4/50K with the car.

You got to pay 1400...!!!! So you expect more than 1400 to go wrong from 50 -100K...!!!

I have owned many cars past the 70K mark... and I have never spent that much in repairs...wow!!!

that adds another 1400 to the cost of the car. In this day and age we expect cars to last to 100K.. so now you have to spend another 1400!!!

Originally (when I bought my car) I was sold the 7 yr / 75K mile extended warranty for $2195. Apparently that is the RETAIL price. A few weeks later I cancelled it (their price was NON NEGOTIABLE) and bought a 7 yr / 100K mile extended warranty for $1350 at a different dealership. The fleet manager was up front and said he was making around $300 off it. I'm guess their cost is probably $1000.

Just make sure you get an Acura Care extended warranty. Keyes in Van Nuys, CA originally quoted me prices for their "Keyes" extended warranty. He said it was $60 less than the Acura Care warranty. Not worth it!!!

Well I also 7yrs/100K extended warranty for around $1300-1400 (forgot), but the thing is if I don't use my extended warranty at all, I got all my money back.

I'm not a believer in these things, but my insurance company (GEICO) offered me the best deal on one-- less than $1000.

An Acura Care warranty? Read the fine print on the back of the documentation... You will get a pro-rated amount minus a cancellation fee... You do not get back the full amount.

Regarding Geico, please double check with them that you can bring it to the dealer to fix your car. I was told that you will have to bring your car into a proved Geico mechanic and not the dealer. This was the reason why I bought the ext warranty from the dealer for $1300.. Was deciding the extra warranty from acura or geico.

I too looked into an aftermarket ext warranty through my credit union (would have been ~$600 cheaper). Only thing is that they wouldn't cover any "navigation systems". With the high reliance on electronic components these days, granted, if a part is going to go bad, chances are its infant mortality will fall within the standard warranty. But, since I don't have AAA (just use my relative's account whenever I needed a triptik) and don't want to risk having towing and rental car coverage on my insurance policy (dare I need it and then they want to raise my rates for using it - trust me, it happened before), as others have said before, its more of a peace of mind.

Just to give you an example of "freak" accidents that can occur...unbeknownst to me, I wound up getting stuck in bumper-bumper traffic and realized too late that the reason was that the road was flooded out. Before I knew it, I had 1" of water in the car. Fortunately, it did not stall and I was able to drive it back to the house. Sure enough, 6 months later, I had to replace the front bearings and then 6 months after that, I had to replace the rear bearings. Both repairs were paid for with the ext warranty.

$0 Deductible Plans Available For Your Acura TL

http://www.curryacuracare.com

ZERO DEDUCTIBLE

$855 to $1260 depending on what you want....

They also give you a $100 discount coupon. So essentially you get a 7/100/$0 for $1160.

If you have navigation, I think it is worth it. Otherwise, its a draw.

I will add my warning that most aftermarket Extended Warranties don't cover Navigation or audio systems.

Acura care does but is not allowed to be sold in Florida. It is considered insurance and is regulated and licensed by the state. Acuracare doesn't have a license in Florida. The dealer makes from $300 and whatever-the-market-will-bear off these policies.

I would like to buy acuracare but they won't sell it to me in Florida.

cal it what you want...

If someone offers something for 1500 and then later it is offered in some other fashion at a lower price, some stay it is a deal. Extended warranties are a money maker... They are not offered as an altrustic gesture by the manufacturer.

I think I would be more concerned about a company trying to push an extended warranty on their cars which to me indicates that the product is unreliable or poorly made.

I have owned several new cars and have never purchased an extended warranty... The 2G acura they extended the warranty on the tranny to 100K without any charge.. Did those of you with a 2G get a rebate since you paid for a 100K warrany to begin with.

Let's face it the tranny is the most likely think to go. I have not heard of any engine problems that cost as much as a tranny does.

Extended warrenties are an Insurance Policy. If you think you that you will incur >$1400 worth of repairs on your car from 50K to 100K mile or 7 yrs, then you should buy it. If you think you will not, then don't. It's a gamble! I think it also depends on how much you can stomach to pay for repairs. If you get hit with a $2000 repair job, is that going to kill your budget? If so, then maybe you should buy the insurance up front with the intial $ outlay.

As an example, do you buy collision insurance for your car? If you have it and you don't get in an accident did you waste your money? Who knows? Its all on how you look at it.

Personally, I never buy extended warranties. I bought an Acura hoping that I was getting a reliable car. But even that is a gamble. I may have gotten the one car on the assembly line that had the Temp installing my transmission when the regular guy went on coffee break.

I remember an episode of the Simpsons where it was discoverd Homer had a crayon stuck in his brain from a childhood incident. When they removed it he became very intelligent but he did not like his new lifestyle. So he had doctor "Moe" reinsert the crayon through his nose into his brain. Moe would insert the crayon deeper and deeper until Homer said something dumb to indicate that the crayon was in deep enough. The last thing Homer said was ..."an extended warrenty! How could I go wrong!"

Hmm the insurance analogy is a bit off .. I buy collision because I have to if I have a bank note on the car. But mostly to protect me from other drivers!!!! You know the type.. the under insured ones !!!!!

Do you know their Ebay User ID? That is a steal.

After reading another thread and someone saying they got one for $995 and seeing the auction from Curry Acura on Ebay for it selling for $1,175, I told my Acura dealer this week when I bought my new TL that if I was going to buy the warranty up front I would give them $1,000 for it, they agreed to match Curry's Ebay price of $1,175 claiming they'd make $10 at that price and then proceeded to try and sell me their own warranty, but I told them I'd just wait to buy it for that price.

Ohh my GOD!! I paid $2800 for the damn thing... I feel totally cheated now ... I was getting a good deal on the car, but i guess they made all their money back in the waranty.

do you guys have any suggestions on how I can cancel it now? I only bought the car on Jan 11th 2005. If I can cancel I dont mind buying it at any other dealership, but I paid so many $$$ i never realized in my excitement to grab hold of my new car.

Pankul,

I was in the same situation when I bought my car. I paid $1,745 from the dealer who sold me the car. I subsequently canceled the policy (have 60 days for full refund, see find details of your policy).

Good luck,
AC

Just to let you all know I called Falconi and basically they will not sell it for $ 975 any longer. Scott told me $1200 because he got reamed out by finance manager for selling it so cheap the last time so best bet would be curry acura

Achan: thanks. I will read up tonight, and update you guys on what's the verdict. Now I obviously have the car financed, and the warranty was a part of the full amount. How did the refund work in your case ? was it $$ back, or they just applied it towards the payment?

I'm not sure exactly how it works with acura, but with most dealerships, the dealership or the manufacturer isn't the actual backer of the warranty. They get the warranty from a warranty company, mark it up, then sell it to customers. If this is the case with the acura warrantys (or even if its not), it could be cheaper to go directly to the various warranty companies, see what their offering for coverage, compare it against the acura warranty, and compare prices.

When it comes to the Acura Care Warranty, Honda Corp. is the guarantor. Be wary of third tier warranty providers, as most have incorporated off shore and might be "fly-by-night" (Warranty Gold). If you really want a non-Acura sponsored warranty, check with your banking institution or insurance company. Ususally, they sponsor companies that are financially stable and have been around for at least a decade. Read the fine print! Unlike Acura's warranty, most do NOT cover navigation. Take a gander at the Alpine website, the screen alone is around $1500 (not including installation).
