I've always suspected my TL would be able to go at least 500 miles on a tank of fuel; I managed it two days in a row.
Given neither tank consumed even 15 gallons of fuel, I could probably have gotten 600+ from yesterdays tank.
This tank took a lot of patience keeping my speed between 68 and 70 while the prevailing traffic was tooling along at about 80.
This tank was a lot easier staying with traffic (typically 75+ except the urban areas where the limit was in the 55-65 range, there were lots of constabulary out today).

This is the reason I haven't gotten over 30MPG in a long time. I have very little patience anymore and rarely keep my highway speeds under 70MPH. I don't think I have ever pushed mine that far. I think about 425-450 is the furthest I have ever pushed it....but I am quite OCD about stopping for fuel when the tank gets to 1/4 when traveling. Some of my paranoia regarding running out of gas on the highway.

COSIGN! I actually worry a bit when the light comes on ANYTIME. I did 425 on a trip, but I knew it was clear sailing and gas stations left and right. Got 31MPG IIRC.

My sis-in-law who only drives her Beetle in the city doesn't gas up until the light comes on. She's had 2 in-tank fuel pumps done--I told her...

I wouldn't exactly say I ran the tank low, there were between 2.5 and 4.5 gallons (depending whether you believe the published capacity of 17 gallons, or the folks who claim to have run their car our of fuel and put in 19 gallons) of fuel left in the tank when I refilled.

My wife and I have a combined two and a half million miles of driving and always go well past the light, typically to the point where the needle is pointing full "E"; we've never needed to replace a fuel pump.
The other thing to consider is the gauge and light on the 3G TLs are stupid conservative; my TL and my 2001 V6 Accord both have tanks published to have slightly over 17 gallons, however, the light on the TL comes on when only ~13 gallons have been consumed, the light in the Accord doesn't illuminate until well over 15 gallons are gone.
Like I said it was just one of those things I heard lol I wasn’t saying it’s something I live by. I’ve gotten tot he point where my light is on and then even to where it said I had less than 10 miles to go before filling up a couple times too. But generally I try to fill up right before or after the light comes on
That is insane... My gas light comes on around 260-280 miles... I travel 18 highway miles to work including 1 city mile going about 75ish on the highway...Best I have got before my light came on was 300 miles last winter with new tires....

Wow, I have almost the same daily commute (20-miles interstate, 3-miles moderately traveled 2-lane highway, 1-mile city), and also drive 75-80 mph on the highway, and the worst ever tank I've gotten when in commute mode was 26 (which equates to about 340 miles on the tank).
The above said, I put a Thule rack on the car with a mountain bike and a cargo bag and then headed west to Denver two weeks ago; at a pretty steady 70 mph, into a stiff head wind I might add, I got only 22 mpg.
