Trip Computer, Gas Mileage, RPMs General Questions

Just purchased a 2007 TL base and wanted to ask a few questions of you all:

1. Do any of you find it odd that I've gone 34 miles on a quarter of a tank of gas so far?

2. I feel like at 35 or 40 miles per hour my RPMs seem high, like it doesn't downshift to 1-esque RPM. But maybe I'm just not used to the way the car is made. Would someone mind to send me what their RPMs say when they are at 30 or 40 mph?

3. On the trip computer, do I have to reset it everytime I drive somewhere? When it says "Average MPG" I'm getting 17 which seems odd to me. Thought the TL was known for better gas mileage. To put it into perspective, my 2010 RDX Turbo gets better gas mileage so far.

4. The trip computer said 53 miles when I only went 8 miles. Plus "time elapsed" takes forever just to update a "second." i.e. 3:58 (go ten minutes) 3:59. How do I fix the computer?

Thoughts?

The TL is only rated for 18mpg, so you getting 17mpg isn't terrible.

As for your other concerns, it seems that the needle drops the most in the first 1/4 of the tank. I've noticed it as well but have gotten used to it. Around 40mph, I believe my tach is over 2k, but don't pay much attention to it. I reset the trip computer every time I fill up but calculate the MPG manually instead of relying on the MID.

It's hard to comment on questions like these in the absence of more detail, including what sort of driving you've been doing and whether you have a manual or automatic transmission. For example, if you drove 34 miles but spent a substantial amount of that time sitting in stopped traffic (say, due to an accident further up the road or some such), your fuel economy will be horrible.

I have a 2004 TL with a 6MT and my fuel economy varies quite widely between all-city and all-highway driving. I can easily do 200 miles more on a tank when I'm out on the highway in 6th gear than I can in local driving, especially if the local driving is during rush hour (just to give an example: there are days when it can take half an hour to go three miles to the subway station nearest to our house....so we don't go to that station, but if we did, I'd be pulling less than 18 mpg while idling in traffic!).

I reset the trip computer when I refuel. The trip computer is theoretically giving you your average mpg reading at any given time, but on the whole over the years I've found it comes out to be pretty close to what I get if I do the math myself as long as I'm putting in close to a full tank (which usually means 14 to 15 gallons; I've never put in 16 gallons in a single fillup).

In my 04 6MT i'm at 2k doing 60MPH. I also average 27-28MPG (mostly freeway) between oil changes. I use the MID miles driven to keep track of the miles I have on my current oil and reset at every oil change. I use my actual trip (a/b) on the odometer to manually calculate my MPG when I fill my tank. I think, not positive, but if i'm doing 35mph in 6th gear my RPMs are just above 1K. I normally downshift to 5th gear at 35mph though.

Rpms depend on the gear it's in vs speed. It's probably in 4th gear and not 5th at those speeds. Nothing wrong with that. Upshifting at too low of a speed increases transmission heat and makes the car feel less responsive.

As for the mpg, there are literally 100 threads covering this. Mpg is directly related to average mph as shown on the MID. I average around 13mph and get around 13mpg. Nothing wrong with the car. I still get 29-34mpg on the freeway.

3. The trip computer will continue to add miles, time and calculate average MPG and average MPH until you reset it or disconnect the battery. It does not automatically reset after every "trip" you take.

4. Time elapsed is the time the car has been running since the last time the MID was reset. The 3:58 you see is actually 3 hours and 58 minutes. So if the car has been driven 53 miles in 4 hours, your average MPH should be about 13.

I would recommend resetting the Trip computer/MID and starting over and see what you get. It sounds like some of the miles and time are from the previous owner.

IHC is correct in that there are 100's of threads on the subject and both of us have contributed to many of them. Here is a link to a thread you might find interesting that shows the correlation of MPH to MPG:

you can reset the trip computer by holding the select button for a couple of seconds

Still a decent amount of gas left when this was taken (we were on our way home from Florida and had stopped for dinner in Emporia; I didn't refuel because I wanted to see if I could push it back above 30 mpg):

This is exactly why I don't understand why Acura didn't provide us with an instantaneous MPG gauge. The Accord had one. As Acura owners we have every right to expect more since we pay more, not less!

Agreed. And to make it worse the info is there, the navi hack will enable it to be displayed. They for whatever reason chose not to display it. Instant mpg is great for learning good technique for saving fuel. It gives you an idea of how you should be driving.

I agree that it would be nice to have instantaneous MPG as a nice feature. I still think the current MID MPG approach is more helpful than instantaneous reads once you know your car. If I could only choose one feature it would be what we have now. The MID MPG mimics closely actual MPG while instantaneous is just the past 5-10 seconds of driving which fluctuates wildly depending on throttle position.

Resetting the MID is consistent with resetting a trip meter that you should also be resetting if you're into validating the accuracy of the MID. You should do those two resets each and every tankful. By doing that you will then wind up trusting the MID's reading because it is VERY accurate based on my experience this past 7 years.

when I drive a TSX for a week, I found that I preferred the average MPG over the instant...

I used to have an 06 accord with navi. It had the instantaneous mpg, but to be honest, its kinda useless, it's super predictable, the more you press on the gas the more it drops. A lot of accord owners on the forum found it useless too. In real world situations, most ppl calculate mpg at the end of the tank anyways. No one's going to ask you "what mpg did you get during those couple seconds?" It's one of those things features that seems cool at first but will quickly get bored of it.

I agree with you guys that if I could choose only one it would be average but instant will show people the relationship of road speed, load, and rpm. It would teach people that high load and low rpm usually gets the best mpg and you have to be much more gentle at low speeds and anything specific to that particular model of car.

Anybody know if the trip/mpg/etc display in a 2010 RDX can be swapped with the same in a 2007 TL?

Noticed the same thing

I have a Garmin Ecoroute that shows instant MPG. I used it a lot for about a week but then pretty much ignored it. But for those that want to adjust their driving habits or learn when they're using a lot of fuel, it's a cool little gadget - if you don't have nav and can't do the hack

I never pay attention to what the rpms are at 30-40 mph. Mine's an auto - 2000 rpm at 70 mph, 2500 rpm at 90 mph.

The guy said he has an 07 base so we know it's an automatic.

Like others have said I also only reset my trip info at each fillup. My average MPG is surprisingly accurate. I am averaging 22-24mog in my 07 Type S manual with only far suburban driving. No city, but also no highway.
Yes it sucks we don't get instantaneous mpg info. Every other car I have owned had that feature as well as avg. geez, even my old 99 vette and 02 grand cherokee had that feature.
