Transmission pressure switches

I read a couple of threads about replacing the transmission pressure switches on our vehicles, so that got me thinking. What are the switches used for, what do they do? Do other makes use transmission switches?

Just curious cause I have never heard of them until I got my Acura.

I don't see a topic explaining exactly what they do and what they are used for.

How do you know it is not the Transmission Selector Switch (aka Gear Position Switch) and not the 3rd and 4th gear solenoids?

Reading several threads, the symptom I have is the blinking D light on the cluster. The car drives in all gears.
