When I hear about tranny problems with the TL, the ones that are getting replaced, is this isolated to the AT only? Have any MT TL owners had problems or replacements?

 

When you hear of tranny problems with the TL, you may be hearing about the 2nd generation TL which had more tranny problems. I've rarely heard of people having tranny problems with the 3rd gen TL.

 

WRONG. The same issues affected the early 04 builds of the 3rd Gen TL (thru about April 04 I believe). Acura issued a TSB on this issue - the "fix" was to install an oil jet kit to lube the 2nd gear. Same tranny as the 2nd gen - same problems.

True, but it wasn't as pronounced as the 2nd gen which I had as well.

 

Getting back to your original question, I know of a former associate who has a 3G TL with a 6MT that had enough problems that the local Acura dealer (where he purchased it) had to rebuild the gearbox.

When he purchased the car in 04, it had ~300 miles on it. He now suspects the car was abused enough in those 300 miles that damaged/bent some shift forks and other components. I was kinda surprised the local dealer just didn'e replace the whoe transaxle with a rebuilt unit but the shop mechanics torn it down and rebuilt all the damaged components. The car was at the dealership for a couple weeks (when he had a loaner TL) while it was disassembled, waiting for parts, and reassembly.

Not many dealerships these days rebuild automatic or manual transmissions.

 

Was this oil jet for mannys too? Same tranny? When you say 2nd gen I immediately think AT since the MT was not available back then. Thanks.

 

No the oil modification for the 5AT boxes only. The majority of manual transmissions (TL included) do not have oil pumps, the oil is spread through the gears sloshing around in the stuff.
