Trading G35 for TL

Hey everyone I got a slight question...
My parents have a 2005 G35 that they got, after giving me their '02 TL-S. I was out of town for new years and they drove my car around and re-fell in love with the TL. Consequently...they went to the acura dealer and tried to trade her G35 for a used TL. Heres what the dealer offered them:

Their 2005 G35 with 13,000 miles ~ $22,000
for a 2006 TL with 10,000 miles ~ $31,000

Splitting the difference they were going to have to pay 9 grand....is this about right? They did say the salesmen weren't as good as the other acura dealer we originally had, and are going to try again...but I thought that the G35 was priced a little low....I know this isn't a G35 forum, but has anyone had anything similar to this?

Dunno about the G35...
But 31K for a 2006 is high. Folks around here are scoring deals in the 28K zone form dealers liquidating the 2006s for 2007s.

according to kelly blue book, the trade-in value for a 4-door 2005 G35 sedan automatic is $22,800...that's assuming the vehicle is in excellent condition and i left all the options as their default checked and unchecked on there...

using the same settings up above, the private party value is $25,950 and the suggested retail is $29,200...

you might check out kelly blue book for yourself and see what you get...if i had found an '05 G35 for $22,000, it would have been hard to decide between that and our '04 TL ...i would say to try and find an '06 TL for around $29,000 or $28,000...i don't know how low you'll get, but i think either of those would be a good deal...

by the way, your parents are very smart...i'm damn glad i didn't get a G35 (unless it was going to be a 2-door)...i've ridden in my friend's '03 G35 4-door and i LOVE our '04 TL way better!

G35s have low resale values... But I think that's a little TOO low.
We sold our 2003 g35 coupe with approx. 40k miles last April and got 20g for it, but then agian I think the sedans are lower than the coupes resale wise.

i dunno abt the G35 trade in value.

but i do know that a 2006 TL with 10k miles is NOT 31k. that is the price of a brand new 06 TL at this point of time (not including tax licensing etc).

I don't use KBB much as it tends to be higher then actual market value in my experience. I use Edmunds and since I don't know what options you have on your car I can't get an accurate number, but I appraised it w/ out no options in Outstanding condition and the trade in value said 20K.

You need to remember, if the dealer gives you a good trade in $$$$ then they'll get their money back on the car purchase. By far the best way to handle this situation is to sell car in the private market and then go to the dealer and pick one up easily for at most 30K. Probably get it for 29K if you try a little harder, and a little harder then that you could prob get it for 28K.

Good luck.

G35's have the highest resale value out of any car. It just dropped a bit more due to new body style.

That's WAY too high for a used 06 TL. New 06 non-navis have gone out the door for around 31,000, navigations were around 2 or 3000 more.

That is a pretty bold statement. "...Highest resale value out of any car"? I have never seen the G35 on any list of high resale value cars (let alone the best of all of them). Besides, I have seen G35s in the local ad papers for pretty hot deals. They don't seem to hold their value well at all (except for the coupe).

The TL has made the top ten list a number of times...

You obviously haven't done your research good enough. Nothing bold about it. Facts are facts. G35 coupe or Sedan, both hold there value very good.

I thought you said THE BEST? Now it's just "Very good?" Make up your mind.

All I know is that around here they are nothing but cheap, at least the sedans are. We all know the coupes hold better value.

"BEST" can be used a number of ways. The best in its class and over MOST cars. The Sedans and coupes have always held there resale value very good.

I purchased my 05 G35 Sedan for 29k. I got 26k for it a year later with 28k of miles.

Don't be ridiculous. You're splitting hairs. The G35 does perform well as far as resale, period. The person who stated that the G35 resale is poor, also hasn't doen their research. No one should be ashamed to admit when they're wrong. It happens.

On topic, the 2005 G35 with its restyled interior and exterior is a large improvement over the 2003. Perhaps the parents should check into a newer G, even the newest G. That said, you can't really go wrong with either car, the TL or the G.

I HATE "stealerships"! Their first number is ALWAYS one that screws you, the consumer. Their figure on the G was low. Their figures on the TL were high. Assuming "normal" 15K/miles/year on the G, trade in is worth $25K. NEW 06 TL's WITH NAVI were going for $31K. Difference $6K. Does the used '06 they are looking at even have NAVI? If not, then the REAL prices difference is more like $3 between the used '05 G and the used '06 non-navi TL. Be carefull. Dealerships (most) don't have ANY love lost for the consummer

Fast-TL - His parents already have a 2005 (at least that is what I read in the OP first post)

I may be wrong, I'm not sure. I only say that because of what I've seen from looking for used G35s for my friends.

My point in that was that last April we got 20g for our 03 g35 coupe with 40k miles, and they are only giving them 22g for their 05 with only 13k miles (if I can remember correctly) so that's kinda low.

You guys might want to try Carmax. I heard that they'll pay more than the dealerships.

BTW- His parents currently have a 2005 G35 and they want to trade for a TL. I was the one with the 2003.

20 for a 03 g35 coupe is low ball. I see them going for 23-25k still at dealers.

And 22g for a 05 is too low again. low ball dealers love to do. Doesn't mean its the resale value of the car.

Something to note, I do believe the 05 G35 was revised and has a little bit different instrument panel, lighting, and LEDs... I could be wrong...
