Unhappy TOTALED or REPAIRABLE?!?

A little bit of my heart bleeds every time I look at this..

I was driving about 30-40 mph in the ghetto part of phoenix on my way to work, when a 1984 Nissan Datsun station wagon came onto the street without looking. The guy then decided to drive off. I turned the car back on and chased after him and he pulled over. Didn't speak a word of english not did he have car insurance. Anyways... here's the result. Waiting on a verdict from the Insurance company.

That's a bummer lummer.

(Sorry)

Unless something cut pushed deeper into the car than we can see, you should definitely be repairable.

***Make sure you tell your insurance company to 'subrogate' your claim. Essentially this will make the other guy's insurance company (or him directly) have to pay everything, including your deductable. If they say that oh they can't because he didn't have insurance, etc, it doesn't matter, by law they have to if you request (they'll sue him if they have to). My mother recently went through the same thing with a similar story, almost a hit in run (but she caught him) and they were illegally in the country, with no insurance.

Get yourself an A-Spec or RonJon bumper! I hope the RonJons are still available - I want one.

Its repairable, doesn't look like it sustained any frame damage from the pictures. Im glad your ok and that you caught the other driver. It blows my mind that people can just drive without any insurance. I would make sure he pays for everything even your deductible.

I apologize.. i left out the kicker of the story. So this isn't the first time I've been involved in an accident with an uninsured driver. In Arizona, they are all broke and even if the court were to go after them, they probably wouldn't recover much. ANYWAYS... The guy was scared s***less that I called the cops and was afraid he was going to get deported.. I told him to get me my $500 deductible, so he drove home in his car that was pretty messed up (back left wheel about to fall off) while his wife waited with me. Comes back and gives me $500 in cash. Then drives off. Should've told him more, but I try to be an honest dude. The police did come though... cited him with 2 tickets and let him go...

And yea it is unfortunate that they can just drive around without any insurance. I just hope my premium doesn't go up.

wow that sucks. IMO i think u shouldnt have let him go with only $500. From my experience your premium IS going to go up and your gonna be paying for it for a long time. Your insurance company doesnt care whos fault it is if their paying for the crash.

Even though I wouldn't of asked just for "$500", I see why you did it. $500 is better then nothing and is enough dough to fix your car (deductible). Insurance won't go up unless you have a history (alot-recent-onrecord) of accidents and/or tickets.

isn't this why we should all have uninsured motorists insurance on our policies?

sorry for the accident OP. you can subrogate all you want the likelihood of getting the money from the responsible party that doesn't have it in the first place will be difficult.

your insurance shouldn't go up unless you've been in A LOT of recent at fault incidences and made a number of claims on your policy (as the champ mentioned).

as far as your car is concerned...it'll be a couple to a few thousand to get it all right assuming it's all cosmetic in nature. so no it won't be totaled.

I'm assuming your airbags didn't blow. If they did, I wouldn't keep the car. It will be your worst enemy when/if you decide to sell or trade it. I know from experience.

The total cost came out to $5300 dollars so far. They're going to replace the bumper, grill, radiator, Compressor, blend the paint with the fenders, replace the clear bra, and still waiting to hear back about the door.

This is my first accident with this car and 1st one with this insurance company and in the last 2 to 3 years... So hopefully premiums won't go up.

I'm going to have them check the alignment and do a diagnostic I case the engine was affected. Anything else I should be taking care of while they have it?!

So this unlicensed uninsured illegal driver was given 2 tickets and sent on his way. I doubt those tickets will be paid. He should have been arrested, deported and his car confiscated. If everyone that owned a car had insurance I would not need uninsured coverage.

usually when its a no fault or not at fault accident....your premiums shouldn't go up. accident forgiveness.

the estimate sounds about right...once you add in the mechanical issues (which some have been at this point). you forgot to mention your hood, BTW.

Our insurance company does not have accident forgiveness.

Yup, this bothers me as well. At the minimum, he should have the car impounded and been arrested for leaving the accident scene. I have no sympathy for people like this. Hey, if you don't want to buy insurance, then don't drive.

Good luck with the repairs.

So some of the parts they are replacing are not OEM and seem to be finding the lowest cost materials to replace with. Anyone have any experience with Insurance companies skimping on OEM parts on repairs?

easy fix all day. I do auto body we fix a lot of TL's. on the aftermarket parts . its all apart of your cheep rates you get from insurance .. very few companies use OE parts . allstate and statefarm do I think . but if you have progressive or gieco they are the worst .. see if they will use USED parts . good luck to you

I'm in North Phoenix by the I-17 and Happy Valley, but work downtown! I only took the McDowell exit off the 17 that day to get some blood work done before going to work. What a mess.

Yea they are fixing it now. Most of what they're using is OEM except the AC compressor and radiator which are "Quality Replacement Part" and my headlight cover (OEM surplus).

^^^Why you would bring to some body shop to do it? I would let an Acura dealer fix it because they use OEM parts on everything. I had similar experience before when someone crash into my 00 TL and I let a average body shop take care of it and the result was every disappointing. Some of the bumper clips are missing, paint job look like crap on the door near side skirt (I think I can use spray can and do a better job than this). They used TYC headlight and after market parts but charge insurance with OEM price. The headlight output with TYC is horrible compare with OEM one.

What makes you think he is illegal? Maybe he just has a bad new jersey accent

McDowell and the 17? Yeah, not a great place to be...especially for an accident.

So liberty mutual won't authorize OEM radiator or AC condenser... It's like a 150 to 200 difference. Worth it? Im gonna fight them for it but anyone know where I can get those 2 things really fast online just in case?

Sick of insurance companies... Healthcare and autocare!
