TL Windshield Repair
TL Windshield Repair
A stone cracked the TL's windshield requiring replacement.
Insurance company has a deal with Safelight, so after the $500 deductible they paid $237.00. $737,00 total
After forking over the $500 I checked the the Safelite website: Sale! Regularly $952.79 now only $301.95.
A call to Safelight says they used higher quality PPG glass.
Does this sound like BS?
Anyone have any experience here??

I just had mine replaced yesterday, rock chip expanded into 3ft crack very quickly. I used safelite and it was $838, I have $0 deductable glass (an absolute must in AZ). There is always a cheaper glass you can get, the windshields we got have the required acoustic layer. This is because the tweeters and center speaker face the windshield and the sound has to reflect off the window.
Anyways, i'd have preferred OEM glass but the one I got seems OK.

My dealer quoted me 890 plus tx to replace my windshield. My deductible is $500, and my insurance company is willing to pay only $672. So I called safelite and they quoted me $316, which seems very cheap considering that the part alone is priced close to $700.
My question is does safelite install OEM windshield or some knockoff?
Thanks

Update: a few weeks ago, and only 400 miles on the new windshield and I got a huge 8-line star right in the middle of the driver side on the windshield. I was only driving about 15MPH when this happened, and a car changed lanes in front of me (just turning right from a 2-lane right turn lane). It kicked up a rock that seemed very small but it created a huge star.
So either I was VERY unlucky, or this safelite glass is much more fragile. In any case, I dont think I want to piss off insurance with yet another $800 claim
. and I think it's too big to fill
.
If you can cover the crack with a dollar bill- it can usually be glued and stopped
Cash customers pay about 1/3 of insurance co.s price
Its a scam!
Some insurance co.s will pay for safelite to do chip repair at no cost
to you and no effect on your insurance rate- worth a try before
gettng another windshield
And look for a small private shop- they all get glass from the same place
its about the overhead~

i want to say it's not by insurance company, but by whatever state you live in. i know FOR A FACT that those who live in florida have their windshields replaced FREE OF CHARGE by whatever insurance company they are covered by. if you live there and have ever paid to have your windshield replaced, you were OWNED.
i live in washington state and had two choices:
1. fork over the $500 deductible for my windshield replacement
OR
2. pay $275 out of pocket to our windshield supplier (i work at a car dealership, so the perks are pretty nice) and get an OEM windshield with the acoustic dampening and UV protectant installed on the lot.
i chose number 2 by the way...
our windshields retail right around $900 a pop, $300 if you go the cheap glass route.

I had my windshield replaced on my 06TL by safelite at a cost of 298 dollars (final price including tax and installation). The dealer recommended me their "window guy" who wanted 800 using the Honda OEM glass, which is 100% identical to the one I got, except I have no Honda logo. Also the replacement has the acoustic inner-layer, because I saw that on the part number on the receipt. And it was made by lamisafe, same as the original one. By the way, this was in Maryland.

It's not a big insurance company.. they don't even have TV Ads. They give substantial discounts to people in the education field
Depends on state law and insurance company. I cracked my windshield in 12/05. I was quoted $800-$1000 by dealer and Safelite at the time. Safelite said it was because the car was new windshield design and prices should come down within six months.
I waited and last summer paid ~$300 for the Safelite replacement. It's about the same glass spec as OEM with a better defect warranty. Didn't know that they quoted two prices, I have a high deductible with 3A and no specific glass coverage.

This is what the Safelite rep told me. Also, it looks and works the same. Logo is now on passenger side instead of drivers. Has same tint lines and built-in clip for the mirror. It is OEM spec. Give them a call or check their website or just pay OEM.
With the design of the car I don't think it makes any difference. From the history that I see here, it will just have to be replaced again.
Here's my 2 cents.
If it's a bulls-eye, repair kits can fill the hole and should fix the problem. You might see a small mark on your windshield.
If it's a crack, it might be repairable. As someone mentioned, your insurance company might pay for the entire repair. The shops that I contacted for my car said that if it was under the length of a dollar bill, it was repairable.
Now if it wasn't repairable, then your options are stealership, (oops, did I say that?) OR you do what I did just this past month when the windshield on my car (Honda Accord) got hit by a stone. I called the manufacturer of the glass, called their national sales manager, got the name of a distributor in NJ, called them and got the name of a shop they sell glass to and got that shop to install my new windshield. I got OEM glass for 40% of what the dealer wanted to charge me. Funny thing was the shop that did my windshield does business with the dealer I normally use! As to the numbers, 2 dealers wanted roughly $640 plus tax. The independent shop did it for $250 plus tax and I mentioned, I got OEM glass.
One thing I must say, get it done right. (Gloves when handling the area where the adhesive will be, proper cleaning, etc) Make sure they use the proper adhesive. Some adhesive's cure within 1 hour and it's safe to drive after 1 hour. Check out this site: http://automotive.dow.com/automotive...ech/Safety.htm
You don't want that windshield popping out if you ever get into an accident. That windshield holds your front airbags in place should they deploy.
