TL Software Updates -- Possible?
TL Software Updates -- Possible?
Looking at the Bluetooth implementation on the much less expensive Toyota Prius, it's clear that there's room for improvement in the TL HandsFreeLink system.
The Prius provides the user with a keypad on the NAV screen from which to dial numbers (while stopped) and access memorized numbers (while driving). Additionally, it does provide for synching of address books (albeit limited).
I don't know if Johnson Controls also provided the bluetooth for the Prius, but no matter -- the TL's implementation has already been outdone by an mid-entry level car (base MSRP: $20,595).
My question is... what is Acura's commitment to the early adopters of the new TL? Will it be similar to other industries, where early adopters will get free (or low cost) software updates? Or, are the 04 buyers out of luck when the 05's come out with great new software features.
Where the technology doesn't interface with the car's drivechain, safety systems, or car essentials, it seems very plausible that it can be updated independently of the car's model year.
HandsFreeLink is a great example: There's really nothing about the TL itself that would stop Acura from providing an upgrade to its functionality. NAVI is very similar.
Does anyone who works in or near the industry have any insight into Acura's plans/commitment to updates independent of car model year?
I'd rather keep this thread free of speculation and full of real data, if possible. Even if you can only provide contact info within Acura so I can research this myself, that'd be helpful.
Thanks much,
Jon

I can see updates for the navi system as it essentially runs on windows OS and has at least two input devices (DVD-ROM and PC-Card). However, the BT system seems independent since the non-navi models come with it, and I think it would be harder to upgrade. I think the Prius was able to go further because all Prius's have an LCD screen, right? For monitoring of the hybrid system and what not. Anything else I would have to say would be pure speculation...
RJC,
Yes, it does seem that Johnson Controls makes the HFL, while Alpine makes the NAVI. That said, there is integration there (there's a SEND button on the NAVI that activates the HFL). Since the NAVI POIs can obviously be dialed vai HFL, the ability for NAVI to "dial" the HFL is there. It's just the matter of adding a keypad and phonebook interface to the NAVI system at that point.
Either way, the question remains: What is Acura's commitment to owners? This is a critical question, and I would like to know how we can go about getting it answers (or changed, if the answer is wrong
).
