i think the consensus is that it doesnt matter unless you're particular about looks.

Looking at it with the top slots pointing the rear as the disc turns it would shear outwards which makes more sense to me, rather than towards the hub. oh well.

edit: rotors with directional vanes have it in the orientation with the top of the vane pointed towards the rear.

edit2: looking at these wilwood directional vane rotors, orientation of the slots on the surface of the rotor doesnt really matter. It has slots pointing both ways.

It really depends on the manufacture of the rotors. I know the Stoptech cross drilled/slotted rotors should have the slots angled towards the rear. It may look like it's backwards, but the internal vanes are directional so this would be the proper orientation for this brand/type of rotor. If the vanes are straight or the disc is solid (like our rears) then it doesn't matter as much. I know when I bought my Stoptech rotors there was a sheet in each box that showed the rotor direction and a section view of directional vanes. If I had a scanner, I'd post it up here.

Each manufacturer probably recommends different setups.
