Tl-s Mpg

As you can see from my post count and my age I am a new young member to this community. For months i have been looking at this forum and honestly this is probably the reason why i got my car. A couple of days ago I got at 2007 SSM TL-S with 7k miles and I have to say this is a way better improvement from my 2002 Maxima. But i was just wondering one thing: What was your mpg when you first got your car? The first day or two i was driving the car hard and the tire pressure was low so i figured this was cause of the low mpg i was averaging, but last night i drove an hour and a half on the NJ Turnpike cruising at 73mph and i only managed to get 26 mpg. Did the previous owner not break it in correctly or maybe is it something that im doing? Someone please fill me in.
LOL AND YES I KNOW THIS THREAD IS WORTHLESS WITHOUT PICS, BUT I'M AT SCHOOL NOW AND I DON'T HAVE MY CAMERA. I will try to post pics as soon as i can, please bear with me...

Thanks for the comments and advice in advance

26mpg.. eh.. kinda normal

when i drive to atlantic city on the garden state, i am usually at a solid 80mph , getting around 26-27mpg.... BUT , i reset the trip computer AFTER i reached 80mph... so the acceleration doesnt affect my MPG

It's better than my 24 MPG .... then again, I would expect that number to go a bit higher, say around 27, after my first oil change ...

Don't trust your trip comptuer. Fill it up before you leave and refill it when you arrive at your destination (make sure you wait a good 300 miles though). Calculate your mileage that way.

BTW, 26 MPG for that car is pretty good if you compare it to the EPA estimate from this website.

make sure your are using 91+ octane, lower than that will damage the motor and cause you to get lower MPG, also pollute more.

My driving consists of 70% highway / 30% city and I'll get 27-28MPG in this cold wet Ohio winter weather. I'm using 93 octane. Next tank I will be giving my TL the Lucas treatment.

BTW, this is on a 5AT

its funny because

2006 TL was like 20/28 EPA
2007 TL-S is 19/27
2008 TL-S is 17/26

Thanks alot guys for all the responses, now i feel a little more comfortable. I was reading some other threads about people averaging around 30 mpg and i got a little scared, but they dont really mention whether they have a tl or a tl-s.

EPA changed the way the estimates are calculated in 2008. Are you comparing apples-to-apples?

36 cold? If I'm @ 33/32 (front/rear) cold, they tend to heat up to 39/37 on the highway when it's about 45 °F outside. I would think your tires would heat up to 41/40 or so?

The recommended tire pressures are different on a TL vs. TL-S due to suspension tuning.
The TL-S is 35f, 32r cold. The three pound differential makes your handling much better.
At 15K, I am averaging around 28 mpg with 70/30 mixed driving on my '07 TL-S.
I also have a K&N CAI and P2R spacer/gaskets, which may be helping some.

Ya 36f and 33r cold is what I'm at currently...as S PAW 1 mentioned above, the TLS has different requirements than the TL

Yeah, I understand that. My point was just to illustrate how 33/32 cold --> 39/37 under normal conditions. So, what your 36 cold? If so, I would expect ~42 warm.

According to my my TPMS my pressure is at 33/32psi when cold and warmed up there about 34-35psi. This is on a 07 TL. Also in 50 to 75*F.

My car returns 31 mpg easily on the highway. Engine is still relatively green with only 3500 miles on it.

Mixed driving I get 22-24 mpg.

How much of an influence do you guys think oil life has on the mpg? Right now I'm at 20% and i know that I'm due for an oil change real soon, but when i went to the dealer i was told to come back when it was 15%.

Wow, I only get about 20 mpg pretty consistently..17,XXX miles now on 07 Type S.

All city though, lots of stop and go...Real Estate!

Oh well I didn't buy the car to get great gas mileage. However, the few trips I have taken I did manage to get pretty decent range out of the tank.

Trip down to DC. I'm sure MPG would be higher if I drove a bit slower. But definitely not bad.

your avg speed shows 64. That means you probably drove almost all of it on the FWY/HWY. 31MPG is hard to accomplish though, especially if you own a TLS.

i usually have an avg mph in the 30's.... so my MPG is in the teens. mostly city driving though

I had 08 Type-S with 8,300 miles I drive 20 miles each way to work each day in suburban ATL driving that averages 25-30MPH on the trip computer. The Trip computer MPG is notoriously inaccurate and is usually 1-1.5MPG over what you are really getting. I have hand calculated every tank I had and my overall average is 21.8MPG, compared to 22.4MPG for my 07 TL that had 11K miles on it in same driving. On good highway drive I can get 27MPG+ on the Type-S and 28-30MPG on the 07 TL. I found the MPG will improve a tad around 5k miles on the car. I also used only 0W20 Mobil1 after 2K miles and toward end 5W20 Mobil1.

I only have 2,000 miles on my 08 TL Type S..........getting 16-17 MPG city. On the highway it varies quite a bit:
65-70MPH I get 29-30 according to the Trip Computer, but I am expecting it to get a little better as the car "breaks in" more.

BTW, what is you tire pressure set at?? (psi) This will affect your MPGs.

For TL Type S you want:
35-37 psi FRONT (cold reading)
32-34 psi REAR (cold reading)

I've been logging mpg since day one. I'm now at 15k, the MID has been pretty damn accurate. Every time I fill up, I reset. I know exactly how much is in the tank and how much will go in the tank. ------>for example if I calculated I used 16.1 gallons, then exactly 16.1 gallons goes in and the pump stops.(I've never topped off, ever) It's happened over and over again every time I've filled up. Obvously, if you can calculate the amount of fuel consumed to the the tee---then the mpg is very accurate.

The MID becomes notoriously inaccurate when you start changing stuff, like wheel diameter, etc. Then you have to do stuff by hand because you affected the way the MID calculates.

This is 10 mph faster. An hour later my avg speed dropped into the 65 range and I hit 31.

Glad you have an accurate MID, I haev owned a few 3G TLs and I do top off, but since I consistently top off the same way I would expect the MPG to be the same. For me the MID has always been over, usually about 1MPG, depends I guess on how they round off the MID. I have never had it off by more than 1.5 MPG. For what this car is the MPG either way is exceelent, came close to getting a G35 this time, but you read all the G owners getting 15-17MPG and at $3.50 a gallon thats an extra $500+ a year for me, I'll wait for the G37 sedan with 7 speed auto next year, until then I love the 08 Type-S!!

New TL-08-first tank 16 mpg!

Hi,

After my first tank in my brand new 08-TL, I averaged only 16 mpg. It is almost half of what I get on my Honda Civic and definitely scaring me! Fell for the looks and luxury of the TL! Overall I am very happy but the mileage is bugging me. Wonder if I should wait some more tanks before jumping on to a conclusion or if I should talk to the dealer. Any thoughts???

When I picked up my 08 TL-S MT last week, it was averaging about 18 MPG and had about 13 miles on it. Now I'm 3/4 done with the first tank and averaging about 20 mpg with almost 200 miles on it. I do about 50/50 freeway/local. I'm expecting it to get a little better as the car breaks in. Maybe 24 mpg..?

Awesome car. Loving the exhaust note!

16mpg what was your average MPH on that tank? I suspect it was a lot of stop and go driving and possibly heavy acceleration? I am light on the pedal and on my 07 TL with 11K using manual calculations (the MID is off ususally by 1+ MPG) averaged 22.4MPG in mostly suburban commuting. My 08 Type-S at 8,300 miles same type of drive averaged 21.8. Most tanks my avergae MPH is 25-28MPH. My new 08 Type-S on first tank was 21.8 at 26MPH average.

with my 6 mile commute to work with several lights I get about 19mpg (2004 TL)

Recent cross country trip I got 30 to 31 mpg at about 70mph avg speed

35mpg on I-10

My 2004 is getting 35mpg on trips between Houston, TX & New Orleans, LA. This is with the A/C on.

Only enhancements are a K&N panel filter and Bosch +4 spark plugs.
