TL Resale values
I subscribe to a newsletter called Bottom Line Personal. It is a weekly newsletter that covers all sorts of things like finances, investing, health, gadgets, cars, etc.
Well, in the issue I just got over the weekend (April 1, 2005), it has a paragraph on car resale values. Here is what it says:
Cars that should hold their resale value:
These new models are expected to retain 49% to 53% of their purchase price after five years - Mercedes-Benz CLD320 Cabriolet, BMW 5 series, Lexus GX470, Porsche Cayenne, Volvo XC90, Infiniti G35 coupe, Acura TL, Nissan 350Z, Mazda RX8 and Mini Cooper. Those retaining the least value - 17% to 21% after five years: Jaguar X-Type, Mitsubishi Diamante, Chevrolet Blazer sport, Ford Ranger long bed, Mercury Sable, Buick Century, Pontiac Aztec, Chrysler Sebring, Suzuki Vitara, Chevrolet Aveo.
The source for this information was from J.D. Power and Associates. www.jdpower.com.
Good news for us!

This is very good info. Actually it should come as no surprise to anyone on this forum as Acura hit a homerun with our car. I am surprised that the G35 sedan didn't make it on the list. I wonder if it has anything to do with its styling.

The article actually said these cars had 49-53% of purchase price for resale after 5 years (not 3 years). I did notice that the JD Power website was talking about 3 year resale values though.
I would think that they really meant 5 years in the article though. I totally agree that some of the worst cars listed have terrible resale value, but 20% after 3 years would be insane.

I've been thinking of trading my 04 Trailblazer (26,000 miles) for a Honda Pilot. I looked up the trade-in value on Kelly Blue Book and found it to be $17,000. I looked up the trade-in value for an 04 Pilot with the same mileage and it was $24,000. Quite a difference. Should have bought a Pilot to start with. Resale value is one great point for Acuras and Hondas.
