The TL has the BEST cupholders of the three (TL, IS, G35)

While the cupholders are almost identical to my 04 Accord's, they're still better than the IS and G35's. The IS has one hole right in the middle console with no grip. The G35 has a slot, and what's even cheaper is the removalbe plastic divider you put between to allow it to hold two cups lol. The BMW's cupholders look fragile too (pull outs).

I hope they don't change this design in the next TL.

I hope they offset them from the shifter. Tall beverages get in the way of my arm while shifting.

Cup holders is most cases are an after thought when designing a car in other than the American Market. Especially German cars, their too stuck up for them.

Not anymore. You'd be surpised at the R&D they're putting into cupholders now.

And the Germans are not "stuck up," they just believe that the driving experience should not have any distractions. They are moving from this view though as the American market is demanding cupholders/better cupholders.

Yeah, I manged to stab a hole in a foam cup yesterday... Emptied all of the soda into the cup holder. It sucked, but it would have been worse in my saturn...

Im not a huge fan of the rubber grippers inside the holders, but I think I will start enforcing the no soda rule in my car now.

The Audi A4s cup holders are pretty good too, but the thing I hate about the cup holders like geekybiker said is that they get in the way.

Oh and the early 2000 model S-500s have some crappy cup holders. After you use them once or twice the rubbery grip things to hold the cup in place get worn out and bend out of place and get all limp.

Chrysler has put heated and cooled cup holders into the Sebring, that's a cool feature, but it won't make me want to buy a Sebring.

Actually, I like the cupholders in my G35 better than my TL. That removable divider allows me to hold bigger things than the TL's cupholder. It also allows for easy cleaning if you spill something, or as a convenient way to empty it, if you use it to hold other things. The side-by-side layout is also easier to hold the drinks when you are cornering, unlike the front-to-back layout of the TL's cupholders.

I also like the one-piece cover of the G35's better. It looks more eligant than the el-cheapo looking sliding cover on the TL.

The cup holders in the TL provide more hp to the wheels than the cup holders in the G35. It's a fact. I googled it.

I've always found it funny that the Germans consider transporting a beverage to be a distraction but puffing on a lit cigarette at high speeds is perfectly normal. They always seem to have well thought-out ash trays!

I personally like the cup holders on the BMW ///M5 and ///M6. They pop out of the top part of the dash and they are sturdy and out of the way. The TL's cup holder's are also very nice and deep, so I can close the pull out part if I have something not too big inside so it's not in the way. If I do have something the size of a water bottle though, it tends to get in the way.

I really don't like our cup holders. If you put a large cup for like a fast food place in it, the little rubber things hold on for dear life. Its hard to take it out, and you have to be careful because if your not you'll pull the lid off and make a mess like I did a few weeks ago. I'm still in shock.........

The 03+ Accord has better cup holders than TL in my opinion. With Accord I could put two medium size bottles/cups and they would not block my armrest when fully extended. With TL, the 2nd cup holder sits higher for some reasons making it useless when having an armrest fully extended. Even it if is not extended, any bottle put in to it, will stick out making it hard to shift.
Another great thing that 2-door coupe Accord had, were in door bottle holder (could hold up to 0.5L of bottle) TL has no such thing. 

I like the idea of cup holders, but I had the same exact experience! Cup got stuck and I pulled the lid off and made a mess.

I disagree - I had a 3G TL for 3 years and my 07 G35's cupholder are LAME. Try putting two venti iced Americanos in the G35 cup holder - doesn't work. The TL design is better, however, I do like the removable piece as it can be washed should something spill. I also like the slider vs the flippy piece. to each is own... but I'm right!! ;-)

Or how about the sleeve getting caught by the rubber tabs on a venti non-fat latte

I hate when that happens

Just wish the bottom of the TL holders had a rubber insert like the storage area next to the cig lighter. When I put a coffee thermos in the cup holder it rattles like crazy...and the last thing I need is more rattles Guess I could get a sheet of rubber and cut some out.

Twist the cup a little bit as you pull it out - makes the grippers release.
Sucks to shift with a 44 ouncer in it, though, especially with 6mt.

Of course. As a discriminating Type-S buyer it makes sense that cup holders would place above all else in your selection process. Screw that horsepower and styling stuff. It don't mean a thing if your latte jeopardized

I still believe that cup holders are an American [inspired] thing. They exemplify what is, as perceived by the rest of the world, our typically shallow thought process. The Germans I know still scratch their heads over cup holders and why a true driver would ever want them in a car.

Actually, if you remove the removable tray, you can fit two venti sized drinks just fine. My wife and I do that all the time when we get venti drinks. (Tho we usually get grande)

As someone mentioned about the accord's door mounted bottle holders... The G35 has that too, I forgot about that.

And yes, the sleeves getting stuck in the TL's cupholder's annoys me, but not as much as the armrest not being able to be extended. If anything, that is the only thing that really bugs me.... I never close the cover, so that doesn't bother me as much....

You think spilling drinks is bad... Many many moons ago, I was driving back from church with a bunch of girls. There was a potluck at church, and one of the girls had made a big pot of hot-sour soup. So I had one of those huge-huge restaurant sized pots in the back seat, half filled with hot-sour soup... I asked the girl sitting next to it to hold it, while I made a sharp turn... She nodded when I asked her to, but apparently wasn't paying attention, as the entire pot of hot-sour soup spilled all over my back seat and carpet.... I cleaned it as best I could, but the smell of hot-sour soup lingered for several weeks. I asked her about why she didn't hold it, and she said, "I didn't know you meant, right now"

Eh. Bigger drinks get in the way of the 6MT shifters. Still better (cupholders) than the other two.

I say as I sit here sipping Chik-fil-A lemonade from their large Styrofoam cup. I can definitely see marks on the cup where the cupholder grippers where holding on for dear life. As long you know to twist the cups to get them out, the cupholders really do their jobs well.

I'm not sure what your point is...were you referring to my post above about us being a "sick bunch" for devoting this much time and space to cup holders? If so, perhaps you need to read my post again with a little voice inflection which implies some laughter. I think it's pretty darn funny (and cool) that this group is so passionate about their car that they'll talk about the cup holders like this.
