TL 6mt VS M3

So here is my little adventure. I was riding on the highway at about 70 when I look in the rear view and see this nice bmw comiing pretty fast. She catches up to me and passes me. It was a convertible M3 I'd say maybe 2006 or around and it had a hood from the new models.

When she starts passing me I downshift in forth and meet her then acelerate a bit more and start passing her then slow down to her side. He got my drift and boom he was off . As soon I I see her going for it I floor it. We started at about 80mph.

All the way to 110 he managed to get less than a car on me. He was moving faster by by no means leaving me in the dust. She did not let go we went to about 145-150 and by that time she had just less than 2 cars on me (2 cars btween her rear bumper and my front bumper)! I was in total shock and almost disbeleif ! He only got 2 cars from 80mph to 150mph !! I was expecting to get blown away ...

I drive 05 6 speed TL .It was about 50 degrees and my car was running real strong. I was on my stock rims and just have just a cold air , j pipe and tb thermal gasket.

It was on an empty stretch of highway not even close to a city. No one was in danger from our driving.

Just wanted to share my experience I was very proud of my TL!

Nice death man lol looks like you kept up pretty well! You know this but just wanted to point it out..you could have shifted to 3rd at 70MPH. You probably would have made up at least a car in 3rd. Either way, nice job!

The coupe is a high 13s but the convertible is a low 14s car.

By the way, I haven't been back here for a while so hello again everyone.

At infineon raceway I have seen stock M3 coupes run 13.3 at best. All in the driver.

The M3 coupe is a low 13 second car, not high 13s. I had the same experience except I won from a dig. I still don't know how I managed a win, well I do, the driver couldn't have been too good. But that shows you any car within a half second on the street can be a good run. One small driver error on either side could mean a world of difference. Nice run

At 80 you should have downshifted to 3rd. 4th gear at 80 will give you no power.

It's actually kind of close comparing the 2 in terms of time from 80-100. You have to shift from 3rd to 4th ~91, but downshifting to 3rd definitely would've helped a little bit.

Since when can the TL do 140+? Isn't there a limiter at 135 like the Accord?

I believe the '08 model TL Type-S Auto has a fuel cut at 133 mph. I don't know for sure if regular trim TL 5AT '08 model has this limiter or not. But the older model '04~ '06 TL and Type-S have around 150 mph limiter.

There is no electronic limiter on them; they're only limited by drag. The base models are good for ~152 mph.

I really dont think going to 3rd would of helped me. I was just over 80mph (i'm in canada so I was at 133 km/h and 3rd limits at 140km/h.) so for only a couple mph i was not worth it. if if downshifted I would have less then 300rpm to play with in 3rd....

and to 156mph holy Sh** that's fast for a tl lol !

You should let Car & Driver know your car has an electronic limiter.

Why? I can asure you that the car is limited to 150 MPH, as I have hit it once or twice. 5th gear under boost you might see 156 MPH before the computer can cut fuel.

I can tell you the car is not drag limited to 150 MPH by any means, and I know I could rock 165-170 if the ECU was willing. You can almost get to 150 in 4th gear.

Maybe they can drive it. I've had it up to 150mph hit fuel cut. It was like I ran out of gas and it came back on after 148 and it was repetitive. I'm sure without the limiter the car would have pullled to 160mph

'08 TL-S 5AT's (and possibly *some* of '07 TL-S 5AT) have fuel cut at around 133 mph. TL 6MT's have reported 152 mph from both magazine review and by some drivers who ran at max speed. I have heard TL 5AT models hitting 155+.

The TL 5AT gears will allow you go to over 210 mph, if you had the limiter removed and gave some more juice, going downhill. It shows how tall the TL 5At gears are. TL 6MT is at what... 170~ 180 mph or something?

Agree. My old 3G TL (Manual) is maxed out around 150 MPH. When I hit that speed the car was kind of jerk a bit then slowed down, definitely not the drag.

Yours is an '05 model 6MT so your top speed is around 152 mph. You should not get fuel cut of at 150, 152 instead.

I don't think the TL can hit 170 or 180 MPH. My 550i with the limiter removed can do 175 to 180 MPH but that's a V-8.

Agree, the TL is a fairly fast car . . . but not that fast.
