Tire Wear
I want to know what the average miles people are getting on their el-42s? I have less than 10,000 miles and the rears are almost bald. I had rotated the tires once. The dealer told me this is normal Yes or No ?

Thanks RETS, i figured it can`t be normal. They told me they checked the alignment, and nothing is wrong. Any advice I should do ? The place where I brought it was not the dealer I bought it from. I` m also calling my original dealer. Anything I can refer them to ?

I have the same problem with my rears, I have 16,000 miles on mine. Rotated mine at 8,000 and the rears were great, now my rears are bald and my front ones are still good. I hade my alignment the other day and they said they found one of the rears off but coudn't really do a good alignment until I had my new tires in the rear. I hope we can find the solution to this problem some how.

I drove from Wisconsin to Florida with my trunk full this past december, and I had just rotated my tires about a month before and the rears were still great when I left. So I really think this problems is because of the weight. I also had my in-laws visit us and we drove back in forth from Gainesville to Orlando with a full car about 4 times. And that is when I saw my rear tires were bald.

I think its an internal problem, I got told the same thing, I put the New El42,s that the dealer replaced on this Oct, for the winter, I looked today, Guess what the outside part of the tire in the rear is totaly bald. Same thing happened to my summer tires. I am not sure what the problem is. The new winter tires only had 8K on them up to today, something is really up, I dont want to throw on the new Toyo T1-S in a week and destroy another set, Has anybody figured this out??

If your car has been lowered or you very frequently drive with passengers / heavy "rear" loads, given the TL's rear setup I feel you will have excessive rear tire wear. Now, I'm not an alignment specialist and I don't claim to have inside knowledge of the TL,,,, but from what I have read it definitely sounds like Acura did not plan/think about the TL's rear suspension being "compressed" for long periods of time in a straight line... Sure, the geometry setup works great to facilitate cornering when the outside rear compresses giving you toe-in and the inside tire un-weights to give you toe-out. This in turn steers the back of the TL into the turn. But compress both at the same time and both rears give toe-in. The results are like when you learn how to snow ski and use the "snow plow" move with your skis "/ \". The TL s basically dragging the tires along in a straight line. Not enough to "see" the toe-in but obviously enough to destroy a set of tires in as little as 1500 miles like some on this board.
On the other hand, there are many on the board who do load up the back end and have had no issues with tire wear.... This makes me believe that the suspension geometry is OK, but there is a very thin line between a "good" rear alignment and one that will cause issues...
I myself hardly ever have anyone in the back seat and if so it's a few small children. I did however load up the trunk (~100-120 lbs) and drove over 2000 miles for a Florida business trip with no wear issues. Due to reading about this issue from the get-go I have rotated my tires every 3-5K miles. I now have 13k+ and have no difference between front and rear....
Very strange in deed....

Just replaced my OEM EL 42's tires at 15,000 with 2/32 on the front and 3/32 on the rear.
Had Acura of Orange Park road force balance and rotate the tires three times in 13,000 miles.
I have never a car with such shit for tires.
I thought the Bridgestone Potenza RE92 were trash on my 2002 Maxima or the OEM Goodyear Gatorback on my old Mustangs.
The EL 42's were the worst tires I have ever owned!!!
I will see how the new Avon MTech M550 A/S holds up.

Three Wheelin'
My tires look great at 8300 miles but rarely carry passengers or luggage. I rotated them at 7500 but I just saw a blurb on Motorweek where they said they had to replace their long-term TL's at 21000. Your situation doesn't sound normal unless you drive pretty hard.

I had the rear wear problem at 8K miles and it has been posted. In short, the dealer realigned the rear to near zero toe-in the replaced the tires under warranty - no problems since (currently near 20K miles). The wear occurs in fully loaded conditions (rear passengers and full trunk). The suspension geometry is designed to improve corning feel by increasing toe-in as the outside rear corner compresses, which unfortunately increases toe-in excessively when fully loaded. The near-zero toe-in has not adversely affected handling.

The only thing I have different is comptech springs installed by the dealer. I don`t have any load in the back. 9,000 miles and bald means there`s something wrong. Although it could be from the lowered springs.

First of all I don't drive hard, I have a 4 years old in the car probably 90% of the time and I won't drive fast with him in it. All I know is that my first 8,000 miles my rears were great when I rotated them, and then I did my 1200 mile trip with my trunk pretty loaded with stuff. Then I had family come down and had several road trips with 4 adults and a child in the car and started to really notice that my rears were going bald. I really think it is the problem with the weight, because my first 8,000 miles I probably never drove with more than my wife and son in the car. I will definitly talk to my Acura service guy and ask him if to see what he can do. I am going monday for my alignment so I will let you guys know if I can find out something.

Danno,
Like I said, having the comptech springs IE "shorter springs" installed causes the rear tire/suspension geometry to sit higher up in the wheel well.... This is the same as having weight in the trunk/rear seat. The higher up the wheel goes into the wheel well the more the toe-in. Whether the tire/suspension moves up due to "lower/shorter springs" or weight in the trunk you get the same effect.
Rear tires look like this " /-------\ " versus " l-------l "
Good luck

So what would be the correct solution before I destroy another set of tires, I am real close with the dealer and he said he could not touch the problem as it was probally an alignment issue, But come on 8K Miles and totaly bald only on the outside 1 inch of the tires. Not sure how to go about it.
Then you have last years summer tires in wich when I took them off the rears were totaly bald the whole back tire, Put about 11K on them.

KJSmitty, at the time I ordered the springs, there was a caster/ camber kit that comptech had. I ordered the kit, and when it arrived at the dealer, along with the springs, comptech, and the dealer, said its not needed with only a 1" drop. So I had them send it back. Could this have helped ? I think its alot of work to install one now, I think ?
