Timing belt
as you know, rubber can deteriorate.
the timing belt is a mix of rubber and some other compound, so it really depends on extreme weather conditions and how hard you've driven it.
another component that can go, is the tensioner itself..its hydraulic and can fail over time...
but to say when, is any ones guess. you may be able to drive the car for another 100k miles, or it may snap before then.

I live my life paranoid when it comes to my TL i changed everything from timing belt to making sure spark plug #5 wasnt loose..
If you have the funds to change the belt and other items that go along with that maintenance you should do it.

An under 1k job, vs the cost of a new car if the belt breaks? Seems pretty obvious to me. I changed my TB and all associated components at 105k miles. The belt was starting to crack, the hydraulic tensioner had started to leak, and the water pump bearing had some play in it. It was definitely time to get the parts out of there and some new ones in. I went with the Aisin kit, did the work myself, was done in a day. Saved myself at least $600, well worth it for me.

Not sure I follow the logic...doesnt want to spend $1000 but wants to spend $$$$ to get a different car? Why not just cut to the chase and get the new car?
Truthfully it is rare to hear them go but its not just about IF it goes its also about WHERE it goes....aka 100's or 1000's of miles away from your home on a trip or traveling for business.

my car is paid off, and I will gladly spend the couple grand a year(If that) to maintain my vehicle, than to shell out $25-30k over the course of 5 years.
Rubber ages and losses it's flexibility. If the belt snaps your engine is toast and you are looking at a $2000 repair plus the cost of the new timing belt and waterpump.
If your wife doesn't want to shell out the money now, sell the TL now, get as much as you can out of it (expect 1500-2K less due the 105K service not being done as it signifies lack of general maintenance)
If you do spend the money, it'll be under 1K and will keep the car good for another 100K.
