Timing belt

So I bought this timing kit and had my mechanic install it for $650. It was all bagged with Honda part numbers and he didn’t say anything about it being abnormal. The car is running great. Now, I’m reading all about the possibility of fake parts.

The car is not my primary and I only use it for beater duty. I still don’t want to risk an engine. What would you do?

The negative feedback on that seller is all complaints about counterfeit products.

If you would have taken one little step farther, before purchasing, and performed your 'homework' by using the OEM part #'s provided on the ebay listing, it would of been glaringly evident, just by the individual component pricing, that these are straight from the mainland.

Prices aside, that water pump is suspicious. There's supposed to be a Honda logo on it. If you were copying a mold, or even reusing a pilfered retired mold, that's a detail I'd expect to see left out.

It looks massively fake.

Here's a factory water pump that I bought from a dealer. Look at the logo and machining marks

Dude's asking $189 for the whole kit....

I didn't see anywhere in his description saying that they're genuine Honda parts.

I have to ask...why did you buy this?

Agreed. I was just being hasty and was fooled by the Honda bags. Funny the eBay seller actually responded when I asked yesterday about them being genuine. His response: no idea, I’m only the distributor from China.

I just ordered the OEM stuff and will do the job over asap. Thanks for the help everyone!

LOL, I'm sorry but that's a hilarious response.

You are 100% good and right to be doing the job over again with OEM parts. A few years ago, I did the exact same thing with parts from an ebay seller. The belt snapped at 4k RPM going up a hill, after about 10k miles. Miraculously there was minimal damage done, and I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to do it over again with OEM parts in my garage.

Good luck!

My mistake, I did not use OEM but rather the Aisin kit off rockauto when I re-did mine. The Aisin kit has been tried and true around here and I have used it on multiple vehicles with great success.

If you bought it from ebay it's 99% fake with replica tags. Unfortunately, I replaced a belt, water pump and everything and then sold the car and 6 months later the seller called to say engine seized up. Most likely belt broke and they didn't realize. I did some research and realized it was a fake listing.

I just replaced it all with OEM parts. The water pump was literally half the weight, and I cut off the old “new” belt with one swipe from a semi-dull utility knife. It looked like one of the idlers was already leaking grease. It had about 100 miles on it. Bullet dodged!
