Tig weld transmission case

I was having a talk with my mechanic after he was looking at my car. The car seems to have a transmission leak in the case and he has recommended rebuilding it or replacing it with a used one. He said he would rebuild it for $1500 or put in a used one for $450. However, he also said if the car was driving fine when the fluid is full that he could just tig weld the case halves where they are leaking for $150 and it should stop the leak. This sounds odd and was wondering if this would influence the transmission failure rate. What do you guys think?

To be done properly the trans would need disassembled, cleaned, crack ground inside and out and welded inside and out. While he is in there he should throw in a basic rebuild kit (clutches, steels, seals, and other soft parts). This is the only way to get any confidence that it won't crack again.
