At $55k, couldn't you get a Tesla Model 3 Performance? Not sure how comparable they are, but just from a dollar cost. Plus states like CA have incentives. Even NJ waves taxes on EVs which can add up to a lot of money.

Although I love my wife's Tesla Model S, I won't consider a Tesla for my next car. Their support is a joke. Long story short, they once told me (via phone) to go to their local service dept to repair a flat/leaky tire. I got there and the entire service center was CLOSED. (It was MLK Day).

On a side note, people that complain we should be able to buy our cars direct from mfr haven't witnessed how abysmal centrally-managed service will be. With my other cars, I call the local dealer and actually talk to someone THERE, not get re-routed to some call center halfway across the country.

 

Good point, but I think we were just using those to bullet-point how awesome the Genesis G70 and Kia Stinger are. They not only have good performance stats, but I have test-driven both and they have fantastic drive qualities too. I really hope the new Type-S will be comparable, but I'm pessimistic given Acura leaning more on the luxury side lately in most of their vehicles. I don't want to wait that long to buy a new car anyway.

I think the TLX Type S most likely will disappoint some people with whatever HP ratings it has.

 

don't EVs generally have less service though? No oil changes, fewer components, etc. Especially a much simpler car like the Model 3. For tire service, i would just go to a local tire shop anyways and not waste time with Tesla anyways. I'm 45 minutes from their nearest service center anyways so I would have no choice for basic maintenance.

I can understand an S and X are quite a bit fancier so will likely need more service in the long term. They have more sophisticated electronic extras like those door handles or falcon wing doors.

I'm not in the market yet, but I was thinking of taking a few cars for a test drive next year. Not sure a new Acura would be in the picture as they don't have anything similar.

 

Don't want to hijack this thread too much, but I do want to set the record straight on some of these things. Yes, there is much less service required, but you will NEED to occasionally deal with Tesla service regardless and it is abysmal. For the tire thing, I actually wanted to do the repair myself, but you need a special jack pad to prevent damaging the door panel and/or main battery case. Tesla told me to take it to a local shop and I mentioned the jack pad thing and she had no idea what I was talking about. (Fortunately I knew about it because of a forum like this one!) I ended up ordering the jack pad, waiting a week, and patching it myself. Luckily, we have a 3rd car so we were able to let the Tesla sit for a week without much inconvenience. If we did not, that little ordeal would have been a HUGE PITA.

 

I find the current TLX kinda engaging at a tactile level as far as steering and suspension goes, but the drivetrain really does let the car down against modern peers. The 10 speed and a proper V6 turbo could fix a lot that is wrong with the car.

I think where they could make it a compelling buy at ~55k is to load it with standard content and make it basically one trim like the Type R. If you think about the competitive field:

S4 starts at 50
C43 starts at 55
340i starts at 49
Q50 RS starts at 51

Realistically you arent getting any of those (minus the Q50) OTD any cheaper than ~60-65k and even then you might be short on features. If the TLX-S retains its better qualities and adds 60-70 hp plus a real transmission, i think it as a shot to be a good value option in that land between the A4 and S4 that the TL-S played in as well. Yea itll get undercut by cars like the Stinger GT, but thats not really where the aim is.

 

I was at Acura yesterday, the service writer who I've known for years said it's gonna be under $55,000. Acura is literally out for blood this time & to get a BIG piece of the market from what he's heard.

 

He's "Heard". I'm assuming nothing until the car makes its debut. I prefer the G80 over the G70 though.

That's a good point. I feel like Acura has ignored this segment for so long, they didn't care about it too much. But, I just saw a Car and Driver headline that also stated how good the new TL-S would be. I guess only time will tell.

On another note, I pulled the trigger on a new Kia Stinger! I just picked it up two days ago and am absolutely loving it. I hope it will serve me as well as my TL-S has over the last 12 years.

Meh. Don't like the front, too much front overhang, and the area where the rear windshield meets the trunk needs to move forward at least six inches.

Now, I just want to see how much the production version retains from the concept vehicle. If nothing else, I'm glad that they finally caught up with the headlight designs of other premium vehicles. That five-jeweled led design looked dated from the very beginning to me.

 

I agree with you. Hope the styling doesn't change too much, it looks so good right now. Though the sides seem a bit plain, lacking some details or something, I don't know.

Front and rear are amazing tough.
