Things i should look out for?

Ahh, new here. And a big fan of the TLs. After months of searching the market..i think i might of found one for a real good price. the only thing is..it has salvaged title. The shop offered pictures of what happen and fixed up all damages and repainted etc etc. it was a front side hit. Just wondering tho,
is there anything specific i should look out for when taking a look at the car? maybe something only to acura cars that would be quite an important factor.

Also. idk how it is within the community here..but haha..if i were to get a new paint job..WDP my FAVORITE..would i get flamed on? lol cuz the car is an ugly gold color..no offense to owners with that color..just not my color at all........ lol

thanks in advance guys!

have another shop check that the repairs were done right- the frame is straight and brakes etc are good
The danger in a side hit is damage thru the axles into the engine or transmission
Damage you cant see or feel right now

that gold is a rare color--manual trans? really rare combo
whatever color you like is what you get it painted- just get the door edges and sills painted too so it doesnt look like a junker when you open the door

how much for the salvaged tl? plan on keeping it till you run it down to the ground if you purchase a salvaged vehicle because it's gonna be hard to sell later down the road.

its only 12k....i think thats quite cheap.

and yeah im plannin on keepin it for a while especially with the amount of miles on it.

But i've been reading..and it seems the '04 '05 have real crazy transmission problems? is this something i should really really take in account for and worry about? Or is "changing sensors/Flushing the fluids" will do me just fine.

idk what are your guys recommendations? Not be a cheap ass and find another car? or just go for it?

Looking at the pictures, the car wasn't hit that bad (at least to me it's not that bad). But 12 k for a 04 Salvage is kinda a lot to me. But maybe its because of low mileage. As far as auto's, sorry man dont know much. I run 6 speed. All i heard that auto in TL is a horrible tranny.

12k is a bit too much to pay for that salvage

Like the guys above said, if your keeping it for a long time you can buy salvage. The miles are good but the car is almost 6 years old, try to work the price down a little bit.

thanks guys.
What about a 06 navi with a salvaged title ( hit one the back passenger side door) with 50k miles for 13.5k? this includes all fees tax etc etc.
Or is that a little to high as well?

The 06 with navi is not a bad deal i guess. But it depends what you looking for. If you want navi but newer and little more mileage than 06 is it. But if you careless about navi, but preffer lower miles then i guess 04 is it. Its kinda hard to find an 04 with that low of miles though most of them in their 80s to 100s costing over 10k.

being 19...sucks because insurance is always HIGH especially when u cant be under your rents name because i live in a different state from them lol

I would go with the 06. Simply for the NAVI and its only 1,500 more for two years newer. If it has 50k and you plan on having it for 5 years, then it makes sense. 5 years is about 50-75k miles average, depending on how much you drive. Since it has 50 and it will have 100-125k miles in the 5 years its a good deal, since it will run for a lot longer then 125k miles with proper care. The NAVI might be a buyers persuasion to buy the car when you plan on selling it in the future.

Working at a shop, the damage is not really that bad. If you considering the gold one, look around the area where its been hit. see if it looks clean or sloppy there. Also check what parts they were using. Are they OEM replacement or that cheap china stuff. See how the gaps are. To me Salvage title and clean are not much difference. Yes the salvage is a lot cheaper and harder to sell, but in the end, you lose as much money on a clean title as on salvage, cuz cars lose money over time. Cars are not an investment, its an expenditure.

im in the exact same position as OP. I just bit the bullet on a 04' TL auto non/navi from an auction in the US. its only got 40/miles and got hit in the passenger left side and spun around loosing a bumper (I assume). Just to give u an idea it will cost me in total with taxes/repair/delivery etc about 8500-9000$ cdn. Im a bit worried but the money ill be saving is well worth esp since theres no front damage.

Hi.. New member here as well. I was in the same position as you a couple of weeks ago and I end up picking an 04 with Navi but now I wish that I should have gone with the 06 for 2k more. It has a lot of rust underneath and I already had the AC fixed for 8 bills.

I guess your case is a bit harder decision cause the older one has a lower mileage on it.

Is it salvage? Even for salvage its pretty decent deal consider canadian dollar is more than american.

that rear tire looks to be bent, which can be trouble. So you paid 9k for a car and its not even fixed yet?

yes it does look bent which worries me a bit. and no I havent paid yet. The guy that is getting the car for me (hes been doin this for 20+yrs, a friend of a friend lol) paid for the auction himself and once the car is done i pay him. i just saw the bill of sale from the auction and we talked before on how much it would cost in total.

yes. The exhaust looks crooked too. Sometimes these are auctioned for parts because the parts are worth more to fix the car then it is worth.

the only time i would get a salvaged would be if I knew the person who owned the car. I had friends who just got rear ended and no problems but it ended up being salvage title because it was expensive to fix.

see in my situation the car will be fixed by a mechanic who is a friend of my dad. he strictly works with straightening frames pretty much. been doing it for a while too. the guy that gets the car for me is his next shop neighbour. the way they work is one buys salvaged cars, and our friend fixes them. he is meticulous in his work and he even turns down some cars and sends them elsewhere when hes not comfortable with working on them. he going to be looking after mine so im hoping for the best. I will def post on here once I get the car and all w/ pics.

Ya that looks pretty bad but if you know the guy then you shouldnt have any problems getting back to him in case you see other major problems in the future.

Me personally, I would go with this one than the older gold. As long as the guy can give you some type of warranty. You don't have to worry about the paint job too that you mentioned earlier. Which is another couple of gran depending on the job.

Just couple of control arms and thats it. Not big deal. I doubt any frame damage to that. Couple of bolts, new control arms and it'll be straight. And the wheel probably goona need to be replaced.

Btw for XM radio..how does that work? do you need the navi system for it to work or nahh?

Now the 04s are known for tranny problems but...if u replaced atf every 30k and change ur sensors lets say...by 60k and have regular maintenence then u should be fine right?

and if the car has a salvage title then there is no extended warranty you can purchase?

Okay so..its been a while and i've been still searchin for a TL now with a clean title. I went to go look at one yesterday..
its an 04 black/black AT with navi 57k miles. Kbb states at good condition: 14,600 and fair: 13,600. So i get there..and well the car is covered with scratches here and there..some minor that could be wash and waxed off good but more of them were what i would say..a bit deeper scratches..all around the car..ones where..you could see the paint off and some white pieces...other things like..i think the car ran over a curb and it pushed the end if the sideskirt a bit out just a lil bit tho. hmm what else..front interior is okay normal leather wear...but the back of the passenger seat is all dirted up from his kid kicking the seat..It was in a minor accident that was hit on the bumper and only the bumper was replaced..breaks got a lil rust on them, a bit wheel scratches..car seems to run fine..on idle the rpm@1800.
now idk if its normal..but when you put the car into lets say..2nd or 3rd gear.and u take your foot off the gas pedal for a second and push it back in..is it suppose to accelerate right away or does it kinda lag a bit?

He was asking for 14.5k and i was thinking your crazy not with all the exterior damage so i offered him 13.8k. He said i was crazy and that you will find other cars this year with low miles for 15-16.5k and that i was wasting my time coming down here to get offer that low. so i said nevermind cause he said there were 20 people who emailed him about the car. Today..he calls me back 3 times in the time period of just 2 hours..i didnt pick up cause i knew that he wanted to negiotiate this time..but before i call him back i wanted to know what you guys think??

Btw, he works at a dealership but this is his personal car he was selling so they do make a load of bullshit up.
