Thee Red Light Camera and me!

This may be a dumb question, but here goes. Got off the freeway tonight, rolled down the hill a bit fast, and, someone behind me was very close. It was stop, and probably get rear ended or run the light. So, I ran the light! Flash! Took my picture in my pretty RRP 05 TL! Now, here is my question. I do not have my license plates yet, so. how will they know who to give the ticket to? Is there any way they can track you down thru the Navi signal? or, was I jusr really lucky this time?

Ha, no plates means, no paying for tolls, park anywhere for free, and no camera tickets! I'm sure there could be more on the list. It's a 1 month perk for spurging on a new car.

Don't get carried away though. You still have a posted vin# and if they really need you...you could be tracked by the GPS.

I doubt that they would or even could. The pic will neither reveal the VIN nor whether or not she even has a navi. I would rest easy.

Did you contest your ticket? (You in CA?) CA law explicitely defines a violator as the driver of a vehicle, not the registered owner. One of my friends was in traffic school for an unrelated ticket, and the CHP officer that was teaching it was pretty cool. He said that most all people that contest a photo ticket get it dropped, but not many bother to contest them.

And I've read over the forms they use. (At least the ones in Oregon) You are not required to answer who the driver of the vehicle is, if it's not you. The form they provide asks for the driver's identification, but if you look up the code, it says what is required, and listing the id of the driver is not one of them. I forget the exact wording, but it says that the form they mail you is a sample template of what you need to fill out is. Most just use that form anyways.

I'm not sure about CA, but on the DMV's website for the cameras used in Oregon, the photo radars only result in a ticket if you are going >10 over the limit, and the red light cameras issue a ticket, if the light has been red for > than a predetermined amount of time.

I have plates on the front and back of my car, and I've ran a red light, but not because I wanted to. It was green/yellow, but the guy in front of me slammed on his brakes after crossing the intersection, causing me to come to a complete stop 3/4 through the intersection. It turned red right as I slammed on the brakes, and I saw the flashes and everything, and I was the only car in the intersection. But I never recieved a ticket.

Oh, and it is 100% impossible for them to track you with your Navi unit. GPS is a passive system. There is nothing in the car to "track", as the Navi is only receiving signals, not transmitting them.

On-Star on the other hand.....

Thanks for all of your input! As the flash of the camera went off I thought Oh S***! But then as I was thinking about it I was glad it has been raining so hard for so long and that I have not yet put my plates on the car! That's another thing I have been a bit lazy about doing. Guess I will bite the bullet and put them on this weekend. I will keep you posted, just in case that little photo shows up in the mail with a ticket attached!

Yeah, that's what I was wondering. Do you have a paper temp plate in your window? Would that be visible from the camera?

If you don't have a temp plate, how can it be legal to drive around without ANY type of tag?

another reason why many places have law against placing anything over the plate, even "plate protectors". you can thward those cameras at night simply by placing a transprent film over the plate (usually come with the frame) and the film has some reflective stuff in it. when the flash goes off all the camera gets is a flashed-out license plate (no plate, just a pic of flash feedback). kinda like taking pic of self through a mirror with flash on.

as just a fyi, flash/camera is die'ing technology to prove the owner. soon there will be radio tags buried somewhere in the car, and to remove it you would need to destroy part of the car. so no plates, no stickers, does not matter, radio tags will identify the owner of the car, but not the driver.....

Points to the person who recommended the honest thing... but yeah I don't know what most people would do in that case.

And let's all give a hand to Philly for instituting a similar program on their traffic lights... now if only they would enforce those same rules against their mayor, lol!

Yeah, it sucks to lose the privacy, but people in my area at least have brought it on themselves.

that's AWESOME! yeah we have to have temp plates (which are paper) on our windows here in nj.....but in the past, i've always had the car tinted while i had temps so i'd just take it down and have nothing on the outside...that way there isn't any kind of number showing from the outside....

pretty cool....unless you get pulled over or something

congrats drifty

you cannot be tracked with the GPS system in our car. the navigation system is passive(one way) and there is no way for them to locate your car. the topic of GPS tracking has been discussed before.

Hey Drifty -

I forgot to put my FasTrak transponder in my new TL and drove thru the toll booth. No plates, no ticket, no toll. My $5 victory . . . .

OK, I get it. Sorry I'm was uninformed, missed the thread. Thanks to all for the education.

Regarding my comment about being tracked by the Vin#, some people had suggested that no plates equaled a free pass for everything. I was saying not parking tickets and other non-moving violations.
