Synthetic VS. Regular oil

ok, so our genius of a vehicle knows when we need to change the oil.

in theory (even reality), synthetic lasts longer then regular oil.

would synthetic last longer then regular on this reading?

and if so, by how much?

the only reason i ask is because i know that synthetic is better for my car anyway, but i would just feel better if our reading would still be correct on it

i did a search and didn't find anything, so i apologize in advance if this is a repost.

You gotta be kidding me! What words did you enter for the search? Did you use the search link at the top of the page (the search forum link) and not the thread search link?

The "Search this forum" link is the one to use. The "search this thread" link only searches within the thread you have open. But you are right, any kind of search on oil would have given lots of results.

Short answer to original question: The MID doesn't know what kind of oil you are using. It computes based on engine operating conditions and accumulated revolutions (page 64, owner's manual).

And Hawhyen51 provided an excellent reference with the RR Journals.

Oops. Yeah, that's what I was trying to say: use the search forum link, not search thread link, but now that I look at my post, it reads the other way. Oh well, RTFPost before posting!!!

all i could find was if it was ok to switch to synthetic after a certain number of miles. not about how the MID will react and know if it is synthetic or not. i dont expect the mid to know if its synthetic.....

i just wanted to know if i did use synthetic, will the MID go longer then if i used regular oil based on the properties that the oil is not wearing down as quickly

thanks to Ron for the answer. but a quick question..... when you state 'accumulated revolutions' what exactly are you talking about? the RPM?

btw, i did use the very top search link.

The MID does not know whether dino or synoil is is the crankcase. I think the MID algorithm is programed for dino oil, so if you use synoil and change at the MID's prompt you will be very safe. And yes, Ron meant accumulated revolutions of the engine, I am sure.

hence why i've always said, MID is an advanced idiot light, and i would have wanted Honda to leave out the MID in favor of other enhancements.

Repecat and Ron are correct. This is from the manual, pg 195:
One of the most convenient and important features of the Multi-Information Display on your Acura in the Maintenance Minder.

Based on engine operating conditions and acumulated engine revolutions, the onboard computer in your Acura calculates the remaining engine oil life.

The system also displays the code for other scheduled maintenance items needing service.
