Swapping Steering Wheel - 06 to 07

Has this been discussed at all? Searched and couldn't find a reference to it.

I would like to swap the steering wheel in my 06 w/nav to the new 07 3 spoke wheel. Does anyone know if this is possible?

I like the 3 spoke better but what I would really like is to have the buttons for the MID located on the steering wheel instead of the dash. I cycle through them often and it's a pain, especially since I sit back quite a bit. I realize that the dash buttons would be either dead or redundant however I don't really care about that.

this would require airbag swap, routing of wires for cables, it also would require some cutting and lengthening of wires for the MID, which most likely changed due to the new LCD screen the 07 TL. Honestly, it would be pretty expensive just to move the position of 2 buttons.

the steering wheel swap was lightly talked about when the 07 came out cus ppl were interested in the 3 spoke steering wheel. i don't think anyone on this forum has even tried the swap so we don't even know if it is a direct bolt on fit...and that's not even getting into relocating the MID buttons.

I was wondering the same thing myself, i'd deff do the swap but my guess is you'd need a new wiring harness?

I donno, i'm sure its do-able.

There are going to be several issues with doing this, besides the wires. First, you will not be able to reuse the airbag from the current steering wheel. As it is a different shape and the cover is not the same. The cover is attached to the airbag. As for wiring, there is no "wiring" that runs out to the steering wheel. It uses a contact ring that sends the signal. You would need to replace the steering column as well as the wheel along with purchasing an airbag. This begins to get a little pricey!

Just my .

I am not found of the 07 3 spoke design, but I do like the button layout on that wheel.

I agree. You would need a new steering wheel, new air bag, new steering column, plus either modifying the MID or, more likely, buying a new gauge cluster with the new MID in it. Not to mention the possibility of having to modify or replace the '06 stereo and/or bluetooth modules to interface with the '07 steering wheel controls. You'd be looking at $5,000 at least plus a week's worth of work. Not worth it just to get three spokes and move two MID buttons from the dash to the steering wheel.
