Cool Stupid Navi

Anyone have the same feeling that Navi will once a while take you for a ride? I can't agree more that it has the greatest interface, and database, but the computer doesn't always pick the best route! :smackhead The good thing is the computer recalcuate quickly ... Which setting do most of you use? Direct route? Max. Freeway??

Direct. Yes, there are times I'd pick a different route becasue I know certain roads are quicker or have less traffic or lights, etc. But in a strange place, the navi will get me there, and that's good enough for me.

We have had the Alpine/Honda navi on our 2000 Odyssey and have used it extensively in local and cross country trips. While we hadn't planed to get this feature back then, model scarcity forced us to take it. (Strange, isn't it -- 4 years ago, you *had* to take a navi because non-navi's were scarce - now the tables are turned). When I bought my TL, navi wasn't an option - it was a necessity, after our experience with this system.

There are many instances of strange routing behavior with this system. Great intutive interface, but sometime when you have the navi on for something where you know the best way to get there, it sends you on some strange path. We have concluded that the navi will get you there, but not always by the best possible path.

One other thing I have noticed. This system tries to reroute you back to its original path. Once the initial path is set, if you leave it, it will calculate the quickest path back to its original path. It does not reconsider the entire path to the destination. This can lead to some bizzare recommendations.

On the Odyssey, we usually used Direct routing. Only 2 days on the TL, so I haven't experimented enough with this newer system.
