stuck in 2nd gear on the highway?

this happened last week but i figured id ask. i was driving on the highway last week when it was snowing and i wanted to pass a sand truck that was in the right lane. i was only going about 30 mph and i pressed the gas hard enough to drop in 2nd gear. the tires spun a little bit, i gained traction and caught 2nd gear and passed the truck but the car stayed in 2nd gear and would not shift back. i let my foot of the gas and it still stayed in 2nd gear. i pressed the gas again only to notice i was still in 2nd. i switch to ss mode and tried to upshift and the car still stayed in 2nd gear. only when i shifted into neutral the car came out of 2nd.

i havent had any problems since then but i was wondering if anyone knew what was happening? i have an 04tl auto 71k

thats likely a serious trans problem.
Today has been full of gen3 failures at 28k miles and above! With very surprised owners.
I am gen2 and am well aquaited with this issue~ read our threads for details

Dealer ASAP!!! like, in the morning Drop it off and say- keep it till it does it to you
Sometimes it plays hide and seek with the tech
- if it sticks in 2nd again and you really want to drive it still- park for 30 minutes- cooled down they will usually get you home.
Acura picks up the tow cost if you call the dealer or road service

He's at 71k miles though, you think all of that will still be covered?

ok thanks. i understand what u are saying about bringing it to the dealer. but i have a question. this happened about a week ago and i have driven about 350 miles since then and havent noticed anything weird at all. if i continue to drive the car and nothing else strange happens, am i damaging the tranny even more? i know its hard to tell if anything is wrong from just reading my post but i cant bring it to the dealer right now. however, even i keep driving the car and each day im slowly doing more damage to the tranny, isnt it covered under the extended warrenty any way?

I am gen2 and we had a court case that extended the warranty on trans to 7years+9 months or 109k miles. My replacement went in at 68 and is on the way out at 81, 2001TL

If the trans is going- just drive it until its really easy to see there is a problem and then take it in. Thats what they do- totally freak out and then fine for a month- drives the dealer nuts DOCUMENTING FOR ACURA too- they WANT to replace stuff on warranty- its better than no work at all and they do have to observe prob or pull a code that indicates failure.

I dont know what your standard or extended warranty is- but some gen3 person needs to get a class action going- just like gen2 and get warranty extended.
They cant fix the problem- not in 00-03 not in 04 05 06 07????

Goodwill on Acuras part ~should~ cover you, just mention Gen2 and ask how many of those PER WEEK they do under warranty
Its the Service MANAGER who calls Acura regional warranty rep and works things out.

You might have a microswitch problem- has any soda or water been spilled in the shifter area?
Underneath all that stuff are 3 electrical contact things (me caveman on electical stuff)
those are what acticate the switching system- its fly by wire- not cables of the old days.
You can spray some special cleaner on them and see-

i will probably drive the car until there is a clear problem bc im sure i would bring the car in and they wouldnt find anything wrong and send me on my way. im almost positve that the tranny is covered under the acura care extended warranty. maybe somone could clear that up? i believe im covered until until 2010 or 100k.

i didnt spill anything near the shifter but what is this special spray u speak of? were exactly do u spray it? thanks for the help

I know you have said you are just going to continue driving the car, but it may be worth your while to start a paper trail regarding the problem.
Take it to a dealer and get it down on paper that you experienced a problem with the trannie.....It may help at a later time; especially if by the time the trannie gives up you are past warrantee period.

mine did the samething in the snow and others have reported the same behavor while accelerating on slippery surfaces. I was told by My dealer that is was normal and the traction control would do Whatever it had to do to get the car back under control.

My thought is that the transmission stays in 2nd to protect itself and you. If the transmission was allowed to shift thru the gears while the wheels were spinning then once you gained traction you would go no where because the transmission would be in to high of a gear to accerlate. By staying in 2nd the car has enough power and range to get you and your car out of a potential situation.

Yes the tranny is cover under extended warranty I have had 2 trannys put in mine after the 50k mark. One for a shudder and on for a whine. I don't think you need to worry about it.

Old thread I know but it happened to me the other day and it really got me worried.

05 a/t TL, 74000km
But I hear it happens sometimes, and yes it was very cold and icy outside when it happened so the traction control explanation makes perfect sense.
