South Coast Acura Joyride
I took my car to South Coast Acura in Costa Mesa, CA on Tues, the mileage was 22,592, for break and suspension work. I picked it up on Weds nite and I didnt check the mileage. On Thurs I noticed that the suspension noise was still there so I dropped the car off Thurs morning and picked it up today around 11am. The car had 22,882 miles on it, a bag of twizzlers in the rear seat map pocket and some kind of white powder dirt on the rear seats. They had my car from thurs morning to monday morning and it has 292 more miles on it!!! I can't think of any other explanation other than an employee took it for a weekend to drive and im effing furious! Oh the nav has a destination in Newark, CA and one in El Toro, CA, neither of which I traveled to. Everything points to something shady happening. I confronted my service advisor and he said he typed in the mileage wrong initially and I know for a fact he did not. Even allowing 50 miles for me driving to and fro from the dealer and their roadtests that leaves 242 miles that are unaccounted for... I've filed a complaint with the dealer itself and Acura Corp. The dealer offered me a free oil change LMAO! Right now the dealer said they are reviewing video to see who was in the car when but I don't believe them.
Is there anything else I can do?
DO NOT GO TO SOUTH COAST ACURA!!!

I have horror stories from South Coast Acura service department. DO NOT USE THEM. Go to tustin acura - great service (but bad sales dept). I think I still owe them $$ because they did a $500 AC service on my car i TOLD them NOT to do. But the guy had bad english and did it anyways LOL! I have other stories too but i dont feel like typing it out...

Taking your car to lunch is one thing but 282 miles... That sucks. God only knows how hard they drove it... Sorry for you and your baby...
Wait, the fact that they didnt clean it, didnt remove the stuff from the nav... Shows they are sloppy too. I would tell someone else (cops maybe...) in case they didnt pay any tolls or got caught by a speed camera. If you were the luckiest guy I know maybe they got a ticket for speeding and hand to sign it.

years back I went there shopping for a car. I quoted a RSX at a very low price, the sales rep looks at me and goes, "you can't walk in hear and throw out a price like that you think this is a poker table?" He then gets up and leaves...
ahaha I knew i wasn't gona get the price I was just hoping they would come close to it..
Yeah don't go there horrible dealer..

Speed cameras are in use in Washington DC; Montgomery County, MD; and others.
California has not yet started Speed Cameras but there is a bill that was presented in February of 2008 about it.
But red light cameras are a dime a dozen nowadays.
Me Personally, I would pull those addresses of the navi, do a google search to see if they are businesses or residences, and notify the police and prepare to press charges, as this does/should have legal ramifications. (consult a lawyer) many lawyers also have free consultations (about 30 minutes) and you will know if anything can be done.
As the liability falls with the dealership because vehicle was in their possession at the time the incidence occured. What if they killed a pedestrian and drove off? Who would become liable? Initially you, then it would lead to the dealership.

Definetly, find out where and what those addresses are. My guess is they used your "test drive" as service vehicle for parts, lunch, etc pick up.

South Coast Acura got me in trouble with my wife. it was in for service and someone entered the Green Parrot Cafe on the nav. My wife saw it and thought that i took a girlfriend there... The website describes the green parrot cafe as a romantic cafe. I was livid. South Coast denied everything. Tustin is way better for service from quality and pricing. Plus they have a work area so you can plug your laptop to the intranet.

Well Acura finally admitted to their employee driving the car over the weekend. I thought it was a tech but it was my service advisor. They gave me a copy of the surveillance video and it shows the service advisor taking my car on Saturday and driving it back to work on Monday.
Now I'm going to find a lawyer.

This seems so wrong. Its not like its the end of the world but its the principle of the matter. Here they are supposed to do work on it and the service advisor uses it for his personal weekend car. Shouldn't they have demos he can take?
WOW.
WOW.

Gave you a copy? You actually have a copy in your possesion? That's good. But is also shows the dealership is "cooperating"; trying to limit their exposure in the event of criminal or civil charges.
It also means the dealership is going to scapegoat the Service Advisor - hang him out to dry. 99% they'll say it was completely unauthorized and specifically agaist dealership policy even if they've been doing it for years and/or gave him permission.
You should get some compensation, but don't let these wild claims of new cars and whatnot cloud your thinking. As far as you've stated (if I didn't miss something), no damage was done, just a couple hundred unaccounted miles.
So, what's a couple hundered miles worth? That (plus "pain and suffering") is a more realistic benchmark for your expectations.
- See your lawyer
- Talk to the police. In a sense, maybe a legal sense, your car was stolen.
- Let Acura Corporate know you're investigating legal/criminal action.
- Get the SA's ass fired, if not the Service Manager too.
- Angle for a couple of nice freebies (A-Spec Kit or Wheels or Susp, Lifetime Oil Changes or Scheduled Maint, Extended Warranty, etc).
Aslo, they obviously did NOT go to Newark, CA (one of the navi locaitons) as thats ~400 miles one way. I guess you know that though.

Wow this whole thing is unbelieveable to me, the nerve of that Service Advisor to take your car for the weekend. Definitely do everything in your power to get his ass fired!

Yes I have a cd with the video.
I know getting a new car out of all this is unrealistic but there is no harm in trying to get maximum compensation :-).

This is absolutely ridiculous. I used to work at a BMW dealer and on occasion if there was an intermittant problem they could not duplicate they would call the customer and ask them if they were ok with a technician or service writer to d drive it home for an extended test drive in an attempt to fix it. That was few and far between, but definately would not do it without a reason or permission. Go get em!
