Something strange happened to my TL

So I'm driving to work this morning on my usual route. I've got both hands on the steering wheel at 9 and 3 o'clock. I usually use my left thumb to change channels, switch modes and adjust volume as I drive. Much like with the TV remote I keep browsing through channels all the time.

So here I am driving and all of the sudden I hear the climate control fan get louder. I look over to the upper display for the climate settings (I've got a Navi) and it's no longer on auto and it shows the fan speed at 3/4 the way up. I always leave the climate control on automatic. So I press voice button on the steering and say "Climate control automatic" and all is fine.

What I found strange is that it suddenly disengaged the automatic for no reason. I did go over a nasty bump about 5 seconds before I notice the fan speed change though. But my hands were nowhere near the climate buttons and I don't have any devices with wires dangling that could've hit the buttons or something like that. Except for CD cases in the sidepockets, it looks exactly like it would in a showroom.

Anyway, that was real strange wasn't it?

It's called adjusting the climate control by the position of the sun. If you were driving south in the morning, for example, the drivers side A/C would increase the fan speed for you since the sun would be shining in the the drivers side. Would suggest reading the manual for more details.

I was just going to say the same thing. The climate control should always remain on "Auto" unless a setting is manually adjusted. Weird.

I agree - sounds odd.

According to the Heisenberg / Uncertainty Principle, it shouldn't happen again.

However, based on my experience with automobiles, it will only happen again when the dealer isn't looking at it...

Well, it's the first time it's happened to me and I've never heard about it happening to any other TL owner.

I just noticed this happening to me this morning and I was stunned. How could it happen with both my hands on the wheel?

Maybe another key on my keychain wacked one of the the fan speed buttons when I hit that nasty bump? I doubt it, my keychain isn't that long!

I wonder if that bump could have caused a small spike in the electrical system, not enough to do damage but enough to be misinterpreted as an input signal to the A/C system. I guess if it never happens again, 1) we'll never know, and 2) you won't really care.

This is definitely NOT solar-sensing at work. Plus, I'd guess that early morning sun in Toronto is not intense enough for the system to have to work that hard even if it were.

Hopefully that bumped just caused a minor, one-time electrical snafu. If it never happens again it's probably no big deal.
