Did you see what was used to smash it? I just hope it wasn't one of those exploding sunroofs some owners had experienced.

It may not have been anyone... sun roofs blow out sometimes for no reason. I didnt know it happened until I started doing insurance and we get claims for it all the time. just be happy your visor was closed and you were not driving!

Hispanic Restaurant? Lol.
Nothing against you, but I doubt the cops would put you on top of the list just because a sunroof is broken.
You don't even know if a crime has been made. Is anything stolen? I doubt the sunroof was broken by someone. If anything, the windows first.

It's my understanding that these events happened while traveling highway speeds due to pressure differentials, not while stationary...

A hatchback window is subject to regular shock/stress and frame (around the window) flex from repeated opening and closing...not to mention occasional abuse from slamming....

Point of impact is the top center in that photo, and it's a very small impact like from a screw punch, nothing bad enough to actually break the glass. As well it was from either the top or bottom, not laterally as tempered glass won't hold laterally.
It could be from a defective piece of glass which failed because of high pressure (slam a door quickly) or because of an existing rock chip/damage that finally failed.
Go through your insurance and make sure that they use new seals for the sun-roof to insure it doesn't leak!

Typical scenario for such spontaneous glass breakages is that a small scratch or chip is inflicted on one of the window surfaces from rock chips on the road, grit or sand lodged between the window and window seal, or sharp objects coming in contact with the glass surface. Typically such scratches or chips are not visible to the naked eye and, over time, the scratch or chip enlarges to the point that it penetrates the compressive surface, although it is still too small to be noticeable. Spontaneous glass breakage of tempered glass occurs on all models of vehicles regardless of manufacturer and vehicle line.

The TL is unable to hold *any* pressure. There are two interior/exterior air vents, one next to each taillight assembly in the trunk. The assembly consist of a white plastic frame with black rubber flaps that hang against the plastic frame. The flaps easily open toward the outside with the slightest force. The flaps can be easily opened by just blowing on the flap.
As a humorous side topic - In the winter when the wind is strong and buffeting, and I am traveling such that the wind is a cross wind to me, I can hear these flaps being slammed opened/closed by the varying air pressure created by the outside cross winds. And as a reminder, this is in my gutted TL with no interior.

I have seen this happen to "safety" glass a few times over the years .. its not pressure that does it its the unequal expansion of the different surfaces of the glass stressing against each other. You'll never see it in the windshield.
It even happened on a TV I had years ago when they had safety glass in front of the picture tube.
Its not something particular to the TL.

It has always been my assumption that this vent allows fresh air to flow thru the cabin when the Fresh Air function is on. The fresh air inlet is below the windshield, under the cowling, on the passenger side. However, air will not flow without an exit. I believe this is an air exit for the Fresh Air function. The part's description seems to agree.
