So I need an oil change..

Should I go to an official dealer to get it changed so they can reset the oil counter? Or should I just save money and go to a local shop again? I imagine that going to a local shop would save me money, but they wouldnt be able to reset the oil % counter.

Thanks

EVERYTHING related to general operation- maitenance - driving operational tips,
can be found in the owner manual

Does anyone ever look there first???
Try actually reading the thing some night- amazing things the TL has for stability control.

BTW, I don't really have the time to do a DIY oil change if thats what you're referring to. I'd rather have someone who knows what theyre doing do it.

Ok thank you. I read the manual the night that I bought it, but I guess reading a couple hundred pages of information doesnt help when you're half asleep

Go to a place you trust and that'll give you a good price.

If you indie shop doesn't reset the Oil Life Monitor (or whatever it's called), you should mention it.

If they don't know how to reset the counter, what else don't they know - ya know what I mean?

For basic service a Honda dealer is also an option and may be cheaper than the Acura dealer. Here, the dealer rates are pretty fair (compared to regional/national chains) for Oil Changes.

I avoid the dealer. Find a good independent shop if you are not comfortable doing the work yourself.

Hope you aren't going to a jiffy lube or valvoline type place.

Alrighty, thanks for all the responses. I was always a regular at a particular shop with my previous car, so I think I'm set. I'm just new to all of this maintenance reminder stuff.

Junior, stop being a baby and change it yourself! It'll be good for you to learn how to change your oil, lol! Resetting the MID consists of holding down 1 button.

Better yet, have a friend show you how to change the oil. You will learn a lot and it will be fun.

LOL....it takes all of 15 minutes to change your oil. I guarantee you spend way more time than that calling the dealer, going there, waiting, picking up, signing paperwork etc.

Actually today I got my oil changed at the dealer, A1 service. This of course includes tire roation, inspect all fluids, function of the car, etc. They replaced a regulator on my drivers window for free that I didn't know was out as well. They said the auto-window feature wasn't working right. $134 bucks for the A1 service.

It just depends who you are and really what you're driving. It will be either you doing it or the dealer. I just feel more comfortable with the dealer than myself. I used to on my civic but I let the dealer manage this car.

I actually got my A1 service at the stealership as well, and I paid $49.90. Maybe they actually charged you for the window regulator?

15000 mile service

WOW, thanks for the info on this thread guys. I was about to get my 15000 mile service done in a few months at over $200!!!! All they do is change the oil, transmission fluid, and rotate the tires. When I got the qoute for it, the labor was $199! I can change oil and rotate tires in 30 minutes, but not too sure about the tranny fluid. So, how hard is changing the tranny fluid on these things?

3/8" drive drain bolt, 19 ??? mm fill bolt on top. Both are on very tight, you'll need a breaker bar and new crush washers in addition to 4 quarts of ATF-Z1 for each drain and refill.

There's no need to replace the fluid until the 3 code appears on the Maintenance Minder anyway. This is usually between 40-70k for most people. At that time, I'd do three drain and refills even though Honda only recommends one. The multiple drain and refills will remove more fluid.

If the fluid is brown, there's nothing to be concerned about. Fluid discoloration is normal.

if u can change the oil, u can change the tranny fluid. just look in the 3G garage for the write ups. the write ups actually make it seem more compllcated than it is, it's really easy...like changing the oil lol.

Unlike most, I like my dealer, they have me in and out in under 15 minutes. And if I let them they would wash the car too! Oil change is $29.95, but I bring my own Synthetic and filter and they charge me $17. Worth it since I'm in and out and I don't have those jiffy lube guys getting oily foot prints or hand prints in my car. Also since the dealer is doing it they log it in their system so god forbid I need prrof as warranty claim they have it right there.

It's no secret that dealers rip you off on service....its just a matter of the extent to which that makes some dealers a lot more appealing then others

Sorry, but no. At $139 you found out who the real screwologists are.

Dealer price for A1 here was under $60. It's Oil, Filter, Tire Rotatation and "24-point" inspection. PB paid $49. You got hosed (or paid for the window regulator).

Highly doublt it, window regulator would cost a lot more than that. Most likely, he got the window regulator under warranty, but they charge him a bit more on labor. Cause mfg usually do not paid enough for warranty work to the dealers.

the washer on the drain plug is not a real "crush" washer...there is no need to replace it since it doesnt crush...now if it did crush, then i would say yes replace it...

True, was not saying that OEM oil chanegs are an issue, I'm just lazy and having the record already at the delaership save me the hassle, also builds rapport with the dealership as they see me regularly. They have been very accomidating they just replaced my 1200 mile Type-S passengarer seat leather without any hassles due to a wrinkle issue.

i have mine done at the dealer but with a couple of arrangements:

-i bring my own oil
-i watch (from a reasonable distance)
-i inspect the car afterwards

so far, I spend about $15-18 bucks for the service+oil filter+peace of mind that its done right. they use my own oil and they get me out in a reasonable amount of time.

fair trade to me.

Obviously the key is finding a shop you like. There are great places and shitty places, regardless of the name. I know a few jiffy lubes that do better work than the dealer, and visa versa. Just ask around.

My dealers standard oil change price is $24.95.

20.95 with coupon

12.95 if you bring your own oil/filter.

This includes filing all the fluid check/pressure check.

Tire rotation I think I recall I price of $10 or $15.

I still do my own oil changes/tire rotations and most maintenance.

You keep saying that, Vinnier, but Acura says it IS a crush washer and needs to be changed. Obviously, they are not saying that because they want your $ .25.

If you are going to advise people to ignore the manufacturer's instructions, you need to make it clear that it's your opinion and is contrary to Acura's directions. You wouldn't want it on your conscience if something went wrong.

Maybe you have a different working definition of "crush washer". Mine always deforms. It has a rounded side and a sharp side. The sharp side always flattens out when it is tightened down. It is soft aluminum.

For $ .25, I am not going to ignore the manufacturer's instructions.

quick question.. does oil life indicate time for oil change or how much oil is in the engine?
