So I dropped my car off at the dealer today...

Was experiencing a shutter from the front end between 2nd and 3rd gear.

Took the tech for a ride. He experienced the issue. Torque converter it is. Do these Type S trannies suck?

07-08 TL has same transmission for both type s and base. its supposedly derived from the RL transmission too i think. its solid in that it can hold plenty of power, but a lot of people do get shifting problems. personally, i've had my 07 tl-s transmission rebuilt 1 time.

You can get on better path with your transmission if you switch out the Honda transmission fluid for Red Line. This will prolong the life of your transmission due to less friction modifiers and just a better overall fluid. Shift quality will improve. The only con is that you will harsher shifts meaning that you will feel the car being a bit jerkier. (if you consider this a con, I don't)

With my mixture of Redline D4 and the Racing, i dont feel Jerkier shifts, just crisp fast shifting.

TL got bad rep AT trany because of the 04-05 TL issue. Not all Type S AT is bad, I know it happened to you but that doesn't mean it happened to most Type S owner and yes 07-08 AT is a modified version of RL AT. I have seen 05-06 BMW 5 series got rebuild trany so it isn't just our TL trany suck.

OP people who didn't take care well of their car (maint up to date and extra step prevention) usually run into this kinda of problem, however it might be the previous owner who beat the living hell out of it before trade it in without proper maint. By the time they detect the problem and trying to switch type of ATF and replace the 3rd 4th pressure switches then it become too late.

My torque converter was replaced because of the exact same issue. No more shudder. But I am going to replace the pressure switches soon.

I had this issue on my 06, and it turned out to be motor mounts causing strain. New mounts = no issues.

Honda/Acura tends to make poor automatic transmissions in my experience. I asked this forum about the 5AT reliability on the 07-08 Type-S before buying one, and everyone reassured me they were super reliable, shift great in all conditions, and have no problems at all. I'm not sure why this was the case, since I can easily find many failures and people who have had a transmission rebuilt or replaced.

I directly know of 4 Honda vehicles with automatics that have experienced some transmission issues. I purchased my 6MT TL-S to get away from the auto in my Accord. It still 'worked', just VERY poorly when cold. After 10-15 minutes of driving it was fine, but I was generally at the destination by then. Its been like that for several years, and supposedly rebuilding it generally does not fix the issues.

I can't speak for the specific transmission in your TL, but Honda has not had a very good track record with autos in V6's.

I kinda would like to see what % of what people run what fluids in their transmissions.

I see some transmission threads and I want to run out and do a 3x3 right away! I think it would be cool to see a poll of what fluids everyone is using to see how spread out it is.

I've heard of people using pretty much every different kind there is.
