Had a really dark one on my Civic. Got pulled over and had to take it off or risk a large ticket.

TL has a cover that's just faded yellow.

Had one from Pep Boys that looked nice on our minivan for a couple of years-- before it was ticketed while parked in front of the house.

Smoked and tinted plate covers are illegal in CA.

As already mentioned, tinted covers are a cop magnet. Never had one but a friend of mine did and got a ticket for it plus every other thing the cop could find on his car (tinted windows, rosary hanging from rear-view mirror).

I am guessing it's illegal in every state. I was only planning on getting it for the front.

I didn't have my front plate on my old car for years and I never got pulled over for it.

In Utah i have been pulled over twice for speeding, and both times and they never said anything about the cover. Its tinted, but not drastically just to offset the ugly ass license plate.

Got mine from autobarn.com about a year ago. It's not crazy dark but it gets the job done.

OP depending on what state you live in, be careful with the tinted covers. I get the vibe that cops don't really like it.

Mine isn't really that dark but I HAVE gotten pulled over for it. The cop said that license plate covers in general are illegal (at least here in NC) and that I needed to remove it. I took it off for 3 days and then put it back on. It's been back on for 8 or 9 months with no issues.
