went and looked at an 05 tl with 81k there is a check engine light that the dealer says is for an oxygen sensor that he didnt fix yet becasue he just got the car in. ( which is true, newly listed) The engine sounded kinda loud ticking. he said it would all be fixxed by this weekend and would put ti on the sales slip. Is this too shady?

81,000 miles is a lot for an '05. The ticking could be oil/engine related, which is not good. So let him go over the car and then check it out once again. Just be cautious-don't jump too fast.

The national average is somewhere around 15,000 miles a year. So that one isnt insanely high just a tad above average. So no the miles are not thatttt bad. As far as engine ticking its hard to say because all Honda motors tick (infact most cars do) just not sure when you say loud if its abnormally loud or normal. Go check out another TL and compare. Problem solved!

write down the VIN number
call acura care at 1-800-382-2238x5
tell them you are just looking to buy and want a history check-
how many places has the car lived- where was it last registered, do a recall check to make sure those are all completed, and any warranty work info or other things they can tell you
If it still looks good, take the car to a private shop- one that works on acura/honda as regular part of their business-
pay 50 dollars to have a tech look it over underneath for damage and wearout of brakes-shocks-steering parts, and in the engine compartment for normal noises or unusual wear items.
If its good- make a list of what it needs to negotiate for repair or price cut
note that seller will use cheapest parts to make something sell- sure you can have new brakes...new shocks,,,,
You can visually check all the door and hood seams for being even, and look in the trunk- lift up the carpet- whats it like underneath? sand?- dirt?- spotless clean to hide something or just well detailed

Safety Car
...i have an 05 with 81k
i purchased it brand new too -_- the ticking noise you hear is probably just the valves...need to be tightened. if the engine doesn't run well...could be a sign of poor maintenance or a hard driven car

i bought my 04 with 72K over 2 yrs ago. now with over 115K on it, its still running oerfect. the milage shouldnt bother you at all. if the check engine light is on, it could be a nuber of problems. if you go back and you notice the light is off, make sure you take it for a test drive to see if it comes back one since alot of dealers can just flash the comp and the light will come off. your best bet probably is to find a mechanic you trust and have him go over the car with you. as erick3 stated, the car could have been driven hard or not maintained properly.
try not to settle, there are A LOT of TL's out there. goodluck with your purchase.
