Servicing

Has anyone gotten a service on their car yet? Are you going to just wait every 3000 so miles or just wait til the light comes on?

I am going to wait for the light to come on. Consumers Reports did a long study about oil a long time ago and found that changing when the manufacturer suggest compared to 3,000 miles made no difference on engine wear. I only change my Monte Carlo at 3,000 miles because the dealership charged me $300 when I bought the car and gave me a book of coupons for "free" oil changes at every 3,000 miles.

You may search "minder" or "MID" in this forum. There should have some discussions you may like to know. You may have your questions over there. Someone should be able to give you more hints.

I'd follow the minder to do whatever I have to do. Otherwise, you may have problems to reset it and make your minder accurate.

For example, if you'd like to change your oil/filter at 3000 miles by yourself, and the minder says you're 60% oil life, do you know how to reset it after successfully changing them?... Actually it's resetable by you, but it's hard to reset all other items without Acura dealer's computer access.

My 2cents...

Back in the late 60's when auto dealers first recommended oil changes every 3K miles, it was needed since engines didn't run as clean as they do today. They've continued that practice I suspect due to a couple of things. It's a minor revenue generator plus it keeps bringing their customers back to them and gives dealers the opportunity to review the autos for additional maintenance like brakes, fan belts, air filters etc.

My TL has over 4K miles and the oil is not even dirty yet. My dealer put one of those oil change reminder stickers on the inside of the windshield and it says to change it at 7500 miles which will be about right I think.

I plan to wait till it gets to about 20% or so then take it in. Thats if the light doesn't come on first

I had this exact conversation with the sales guy and svc. mgr. No need to chnage the oil until the MID tells you it's time; probably 7-8K miles depending on driving habits. The new engines burn alot cleaner. This is also in the manual.
