Seriously .. I can't believe this article !

http://autos.yahoo.com/news/greediest-guzzlers.html

I get 280 miles from FULL to the time the yellow light turns on. That's $290 - $300 for the 1250 miles average the article calculates ... So is the type S a GAS GUZZLER too

I could say IS250, but it does have a smaller displacement.

TL is good, but not great by today's standards. Lacking active cylinder management is a huge reason.

And to be fair, EPA ratings for the TL are below 20 for city. On par with many other cars that i'm sure IRL can achieve a higher city mpg.

not another gas mileage thread

it all depends on your driving style and how much city/highway you drive.

city driving, i saw about 280 miles

mixed driving 30/70, 330 miles to a tank

all highway, ive averaged 430 miles.

When my '04 manual was still pretty new (as in a year) and had the original EL42 tires on it, I managed 27.98 during a week of work commute driving one week in the summer. This was from Fair Lakes, which is just northeast of Centreville, VA (western Fairfax County), through residential areas, then through part of Manassas, VA and another 6-7 miles to my home (a 22 mile trip each way). None of this driving was on interstate highways and did include the attendant number of stop lights and stop signs, plus moderately heavy traffic.

That remains the best I have ever gotten for "in-town" driving. Granted, we're not talking New York City, but we are also not talking two-lane country roads.

Fixed. My MID showed that I was getting 9MPG sitting in stop-go traffic today. Average city numbers should be around 20-22MPG.

And around and round we go, another mpg thread.

"City" means nothing. Average mph means everything. City can mean 30mph average for some or 7mph average for others like me. At a 26mph average I get a good 25mpg. At 7mph average I get 9mpg. This has been discussed before. Driving style has very little to do with it. Average mph is the single most important factor by a long shot.

The TL weighs 3,500lbs. It takes a certain amount of hp to accelerate a certain weight. This isn't going to vary much from car to car. A smaller engine with less hp requires more throttle to accelerate the car at the same rate. More throttle equals less pumping losses and more efficiency. Weight is the most important factor here, much more than engine size or hp.

I've found that cars with more hp tend to be a little less sensitive to driver style. I rented a geo metro once that I had to hammer to not die in traffic. It got worse gas mileage than my corvette that was in the shop.

I'm not sure I'm understading you.

You get 280 miles from full until the Orange Light. At that time you have ~4 gallons remaining. IOW, from full, you'd get about 370 miles until dead empty.

That's about 21 mpg, I assume mixed but mostly city. So the 1250 miles at $4/gal is about $240; 25% less than you estimated.

The cars in the article seem to be getting around half that in the city. I get ~18 mostly city.

On the highway, the TL-S will get ~30 - 32 mpg; the cars in the article ~20 mpg.

Besides, if you can afford some of those cars, you're not worried about the cost of gas.

My best on the highway was 33.94 in September '05 with the A/C running the entire time and the car loaded for vacation.

True and one could turn this sentence around as say, "If you bought the TL, you obviously did some pre-purchase research and would have a good idea about its fuel economy ratings".

When someone purchases certain cars, fuel economy is not a primary consideration. A Mustang V8, a Corvette, a Porsche, or an M3 all deliver far more than point-A-to-point-B transportation and the buyer is well aware of that fact. The 3G Acura TL is also in this league due to the fact that it is classed as a performance sedan. Gas mileage is not a weighing factor when one buys cars like this. Performance and the visceral enjoyment of driving a vehicle that is far more than a daily transporter is the main concern for the purchase.

When someone buys one of these machines and it does deliver decent fuel economy, the buyer generally views this as icing on the cake. I have to say that it amazes me that people purchase cars like this then latter complain of their mileage. I am also amazed at the wide spread in reported mileage from so many folks. Interesting.

Complaining about mileage is one thing ... Complaining about mileage not being closed to someone else who has the same car as you and is getting way bettr mileage is another thing
The reason I shared the article is not a complain ... it was shared on the forum to see how many people think that their TL-S is a gas guzzler while actually it does better than those cars listed ... Hope this avoids the confusion. Thanks

Wtf how is that even possible for that car to be showing 7mpg???? When my 07 Type S is averaging 33mph, I will typically be at about 25mpg. I don't even see how the word TLS and gas guzzler are even in the same sentence. Mine does 25 around town and 31 hwy 07 S 6mt. If you are getting high to mid teens it's because your driving in very harsh city traffic. Any car will do horrible when it's stopp 60% of the time. These threads are ridiculous talking about TL fuel economy.... It's very good end of story. You wanna talk about gas guZzler let me tell you about one of my previous cars... An 08 jeep grand Cherokee SRT8.

To add a little more, I think mine was 6-7mpg during the last track day. I've noticed that excessive idling can cause this figure to be very low. At some point the ECU stops or slows down the mph countdown when you're idling for extended periods but the mpg will continue to decline. When I was demoing my system a lot sitting idle for an hour at a time sometimes, I got some weird numbers.

Ever since I installed my exhaust, I can't get more than 400km a tank. My trip to and from work consists of a tunnel and I haven't gone through there with less than 4000rpm. But hey, it puts a big smile on my face everytime so I'm more than willing to pay for my gas.

I can't believe that's your true mileage. If you were getting 7 mpg, you would've burned 11 gallons during your trip. That's from about Full to almost an 1/8th of a tank (the way our guage reads; Orange light comes on when you've run off ~13 gallons from Full).

No problems here and I certainly wasn't chastising you, my friend. My statment was one of generality along with a curiosity as to how and why people get such a wide disparity of reported mileage numbers. Obviously, a host of factors are at play with this, but it is interesting.

I bought my used '07 TL in NYC and when I checked the trip computer, it registered 9 avg mpg. It was driven only in dense NYC traffic. I reset the trip computer, which by the way, had never been reset from original date of purchase. I filled up and drove from NYC to North Carolina and saw as high as 36 avg mpg. Got into some traffic but ended the trip with 33 as the avg. I was very impressed.

OP is an idiot. The image is titled "sick.jpg", so its obviously been edited in some form. Further, when we go into Photoshop and zoom in, we can see all this. You can see a dark rectangle that covered where the 1 was. And if there really were NO 1 in the picture, as in it really was getting 7MPG, there would be no pixel noise that far left of the 7.

What are you trying to prove dude? Quit wasting everyone's time...
