Seafoam Question

I know there is an old Seafoam thread and I've looked through it. I am getting ready to change my sparkplugs for the 2nd time at 100K. Normally they say to to run 1 can of Seafoam when below a half tank (about 8 gal.), then repeat on the next tank. Why not 2 cans of Seafoam on an empty tank at the gas station and fillup?

im assuming its like when you mix anything....

you have to have equal parts, or your cleaning agent, the seafoam will be too strong.

and seafoam is probably just marketing. does it really clean?
our engines run pretty clean and we dont really need seafoam..

Every year before I store my cars I put a full can to a full tank of gas. I have never had an issue on my turbo cars or high compression.

Seafoam does nothing. I've always wondered what people think Seafoam does. When these cars were practically new people were running Seafoam and claiming it made a difference.

I pulled my intake off at 113,000 miles having never run anything through it and there was nothing but a light tan coloration of the metal. Piston tops were mostly shiny. What's there to clean? I don't see fuel injectors getting replaced around here.

I have several vehicles I use seafoam on.. one is a V8 6.0L that eats premium gas like breathing air. I get about 9mpg on premium on my daily commute. When I added seafoam I got 15 mpg. On my TL I avg. 4-5 more mpg. I dont use it every tank but maybe once a month.

Great stuff, the numbers speak for themselves

Aren't you embarrassed to make outrageous claims like that? What you're stating is 100% impossible. Where do you think these gains are coming from? I think it's time to analyze your testing methods.

I think we have beaten the Seafoam horse enough times in the past couple of weeks for sure.....

Many people for sure believe in it for one reason or another. I have used it in my TL with no noticeable difference. I have used it in just about every car I have owned in the past 10 years. Will I continue to use it? Possibly once every year or two...because I can. Do I need to? Doubtful since I use gas 99% of the time from Top Tier stations (QT usually).

Has my MPG ever jumped up with Seafoam? Not that I recall. The only things I have ever experienced on my TL that changed the MPGs around easily were Tires, Tire pressure, and the octane level of the gas.

What do I use Seafoam for the most? My lawn equipment. It works great in my 2-cycle mowers (Lawn-Boy) to help keep the carb from gumming up.

Well, OK then. Since I already have 1 can, I'll just use it when just under a half tank. Good to know that it really doesn't need it.

For what it's worth, Seafoam and those types of cleaners can actually do some good in 2-cycles in both the carb and the combustion chamber and reed valves if it uses reed valves.

Seafoam is more widely used and acknowledged for results when sucked through specific vacuum lines to clean intake tract...

...putting it into the gas tank has never really yielded major results

Does Seafoam do what it claims to do? I believe it does.

Is it necessary/worthwhile to use it in an engine that has used top tier gas with good additives? Probably not. It's overkill IMO.

For the OCD folks, using Seafoam on top of "top tier" gas can't hurt. It's your money and it's not terribly expensive...

Are you using OEM Iridium plugs? If so, this is a huge waste of money. The OEM plugs are easily good to 105K. I pulled my OEM plugs at 106K and they looked great and still had the specified gap... I could tell absolutely no difference with the new plugs.

Subjective results that have never been proven. People see smoke coming out of the tailpipe and assume is this massive carbon buildup in some secret compartment in the engine being cleaned out and expelled through the tailpipe. In reality all you're seeing is the Seafoam burning.

I ask again, what is it that you think Seafoam is cleaning? You must have something in mind when you spend the money and waste the time to put it in the car.

Pretty much. It's like 6 bucks a can - so in terms of throwing money away it isn't a huge loss. I just don't get the claims of a huge MPG increase, etc.

A 67% increase in mileage due to a cleaning additive, that is impossible.

@ the mpg increase...

I use seafoam on my car and I have not seen a difference...

However this is my first car and I have 178K miles on it....when I recently took the valve covers off, it looked very very clean...

am not sure if they would have been the same way if I hadnt used seafoam...

If I use seafoam, I add a can in the oil crank case about 100-ish miles before I plan to do an oil change...I also add 1/2 can in the gas tank when I have about 2 gallons in the tank...the remaining 1/2 can, I add in the vac line using the 'slurp slurp' method...

with oil, I go back and forth between Redline and Mobil 1 EP....

I do this every 15-20K miles...as I mentioned, am not sure if it does anything, but it provides me peace of mind....
