Scion TC vs. Stock TL-S

To begin with i had 3 other people in the car with me, while i was coming back from prom.

So we're cruising down this about 8 mile straight road with minimal red lights, and i see this ricey tc with what i can hear an aftermarket exhaust and green neon lights underneath. So i laugh, and he starts to slow down and challenges me. So im like shoot why not, turned on my radar dector and started from a 55 mph roll. He shoots out first and gets a pretty good lead on me, about maybe a 1 car length. Then i started to finally pull when we were in about 100mph. Finally slowed down for a red light.

I wish my car had more torque, a car packed with people weighs down the TL insanely.

I can see a fully bolted tC doing that, but a close to stock tC would have gotten murdered.

Unless he's force inducted, he has no chance whatsoever.
Also, shouldn't your radar detector be always on?

Nice for for a 17-18 year old though.

There was a video posted of a TL vs an F/I tC .. the tC would murder the TL 50 - 80 (Roll) . But once the TL got moving ... the tC didn't have enough torque to keep up at higher speeds.

..please tell me he had a turbo and you that you didn't lose to just a riced out scion. More importantly.. even though you say it was 'safe straights' ..you're 17-18.. it's not okay to risk the lives of others, if they're in your car then their lives are your responsibility.

I am assuming you have a 5AT TL-S and your tranny probobly didn't downshift into 2nd gear. It probobly stayed in 3rd gear so you were out of your powerband. Or he could have had the TRD supercharger! I know a stock TC isn't going to get out of the mid 15's in MT form.

He was either charged or you were in the wrong gear b/c there's no way he should have been ahead of you from 45-100Mph.

I've run a tC from 50 on the highway, and he didn't even have a chance to get a fender on me.

Yea, from a 55mph roll, indicating that you have a 5AT you should have been in SS mode, you can be in 2nd gear (up to 61mph) so you could have at least punch it then upshifted to 3rd, but being in 3rd (SS mode) and punching it then paddle shifting up to 4th I find if hard to believe that he could have pulled on you immediately. Did you keep it in Auto mode? I agree w/ SatinSlver

Jumbosizeme, it's one thing to make that run as the sole occupant of the car but the lives of three other people were unnecessarily placed at risk. Particularly when you're at an age that clearly makes you a novice driver. (And as I've told my 18 y/o son, three to five years of playing Gran Turismo does not constitute driving experience.)

Now that that's out of the way, I would avoid races with Scion tCs for two reasons: a) only a 1G TL (that's the C25/C32 powered one) would lose to a tC and b) tC drivers many times seem to have an inferiority complex and look to race anything on the road at any time. The latter usually manifests itself in the driver racing excessively (and dangerously) in a vain attempt to prove that the tC is not as slow as the rest of the motoring world knows it is.

Honestly, the only current Honda that would be beaten by a tC is the Civic Hybrid and Insight.

well the OP did have around 400 extra pounds in the car.

But i heard of way too many pre/post prom deaths caused by car accidents so be careful please. Your fortunate for having such a nice car at your age; dont take advantage of it.

And as others stated, you might think you know how to drive, but you never know what can happen. I was like you 2 years ago. Take my word for it.

i dont usually race, just taken cars to the track. But i guess i got caught up into the moment, and for all the people that said i should have murdered the tC, im well aware of that, that is why i stated that there were 3 other passengers with me.

I usually try not to mess around with civics n tc's, but i wanted to see how my car could handle with 3 other people in the car.

Well.. the guy wasn't street racing but he was speeding and I believe the guy was 17 and his teenage girlfriend was with him in the pickup. They had stolen a lawnmower and were fleeing police. I thought it was a decent example of tunnel vision and irresponsibility.. They got turned into hamburger meat over a $200 lawnmower.

Did you know that the amount of people dying in crashes for speeding is about equal to the amount of people dying from crashes due to people sleeping behind the road. Ive done a race or two when i have friends in my car, i'm careful when i choose to do it, and i make sure they are fine with it also. It's dangerous i know and MOST young drivers are inexperienced, i would say i know how to control my car pretty well. Young doesnt mean you are bad driver. Thats like saying your better than lewis hamilton!

young doesnt mean bad, it means inexperienced. im young also and i can admit that there are things i wouldnt expect to happen while driving until i actually experience them. thats why since the OP is young, he most likely has been driving for no more than a year or 2 at most.
