Red face Say what? V8??

I have been aching with this thought for sometime so decided that you guys need to share the pain too.

Imagine a TL with a strong masculine V8. 4.8L+ in displacement. Nearing 400HP+ with matching torque. Sport suspension, roaring engine sound... I’ll let you finish the portrait…

Front wheel drive cars are notorious for their poor traction. The 3G TL is already on the edge and will easily spin the tires in first gear at full throttle. If the platform was a RWD, then you'd have something.

Out of curiosity, is this just daydreaming about the ideal TL?

@Ken1997TL: Why not an Acura? The current lineup is good but some (maybe a tiny number) of us wouldn't mind more ponies just in case God forbids we end up in a situation where we need to engage them

@Aman: RE daydreaming about the ideal TL. As compare to me getting enough signatures to submit a proposal to Acura?

@Netforcer:
You want to get us to 600HP you bad boy?! I am an NA guy but I'll go with the flow - as long as you promise forged internals and getting us to destination fast(er)

@myron:
CTS-V?

What else would you guys add to the protrait?

There is one car out there that I always kind of think of when it comes to the Acura TL. I know you guys wont think its the sweetest car but its actually pretty fun to drive. My dad owns a 2008 Grand Prix GXP which is also FWD and has the 303hp LS4 V8 engine. Its not a huge jump in power compared to the Type S but I assume it has a lot more torque. Anyway, I would give my left nut to be able to drop this motor into a Type S or have Acura make something similar. The exhaust note alone is to die for in that car. I will say the torque steer is insane in that car however I dont know why but I think its fun lol. It also does good on fuel economy.
So in your continuing Acura TL daydream my vote goes to the GM LS4 V8 from the GXP. Hummm I wonder what would happen in a race between a Grand Prix GXP and a Acura TL-S.

Sounds like you should just forget about the TL and buy a 550i

Might as well take it up another level and add "Converting to an Inline v6 rwd conversion”... or inline v8 have your pick... but I think an m3 e36 inline would do the trick just nice...

Lets be honest... move the exhaust and fuel tank around... converting to a rwd doesnt seem to far off...

I don't think there's been an inline 8 made for over 50 years lol.

As for the rest, an LS7 with a very streetable 550hp is doable. The LSx has pretty much the same external dimensions whether it's the 5.3 or 7.0, might was well shoot high.

I knew it was just a matter of few posts and we’ll be indulging north of 550hp but boy 7.0 displacement will definitely get us banned from the site and probably forced to surrender our TLs.

Fine damn it, I will take the LS7 - Please. I'm a bit aggressive on the twisties so the dry sump wouldn’t be a bad idea.

and now imagine the $60K price tag

thats why most of us bought TL's we like the entry level luxury sedans without shelling out as much $$ as it cost for a comparable BMW or MB

Just what I was thinking. I personally would hate a V8 in the 3G TL (assuming it'd retain FWD).

I don't know about that. The Vettes get pretty good mileage on the highway and just as good as my TL around town. I've taken several trips to Vegas (3-4hrs) following my friend's Z06 and the TL averages about 2mpg better on the freeway. Even so, it gets about 28mph over that trip. City mileage is more dependent on the weight of the vehicle than the size of the engine. With that said, the V8 will give you the option to get worse mileage if you choose to use all 400+hp all the time. Even my turbo 6 can get 27-28mpg on the freeway (60mph)driving it nice but do a few pulls and drive it aggressively in city driving and it can easily get down to 8mpg.

No doubt it'd have to be RWD.

The turning radius of the TL is one of the worst i've ever seen--no doubt due to the transverse mounted v6.

I've already been caught making 3 point turns that I usually would've made in one try with my dad's 325i, my old civic, and integra.

the 325i has an extremely good turning radius. I'll bet cause the i6 is mounted longitudinally.

Not when there's a transaxle in the rear of the car.

It's nothing to do with the engine placement. I fully agree that the TL has a terrible turning radius but it's entirely suspension/chassis related. With RWD that can be cured with a little throttle mid corner. I figure since the TL is almost entirely sold in North America, a super tight turning radius is not as needed as it is in European and other countries. My friend's very long CL65 turns much sharper than my TL.

but my point being with the engine being transversely positioned, there's not as much room for suspension/geometry that would allow a tighter turning radius?

RWD generally has a better turning radius simply because there's room for the geometry with the engine mounted longitudinally. Obviously there are many other factors but engine placement imo does have some bearing on the radius.

the E46 325i mentioned can turn extremely tightly without any kind of throttle manipulation..it just turns a significant deal tighter than the TL.

If you mean clearance issues, I doubt it's that. In the wheel wells themselves there's a ton of room with the wheels turned all the way in either direction even with my 255s.

The thread may seem pointless now but the moral of the story is that Acura will be FI’ing a V6 sedan in their line up sooner than later and most certainly offering a performance sedan with a min of 4.8L displacement in the near future to compete for the very rewarding market segment that is being ruled by BMW’s, Merc, Infinity, Jag, Audi and now Hyundai.

Acura, armed with its fascinating advancement and solid history will not let that piece of the pie slip away any longer.

^ re hybrid
Well they tried that with the Accord hybrid and you know what happened..

They will certainly offer some type of ‘green’ toy but make no mistake; the HP wars have yet to start. Not accommodating the middle class’ need for speed (and stress relief after a high productivity work day) -combustion or otherwise- will be a recipe for a buyout.

North of $45K, the consumer will be looking at how much asphalt can he peel off, if he can save a tree doing then let it be.
