Tragic story though, 5 year old Jake.

OMG horrible!! Innocent little kid! Pray for that family!
That car was hit HARD!! Ive been rear ended at 70mph with no brakes and the damage was far far less. Granted I was in a MB and the other car was an Accord but I'd say this guy was going even faster. Fell asleep, drugs, phone etc. Whatever his mistake, how silly yet how costly!!! Permanent damage for something so stupid.
Drive careful everyone. You don't have to be paranoid but just be alert and don't take dumb chances. We all take it for granted way too much. We're all just trying to get to a destination. Bad luck can come anywhere at anytime.

Completely preventable. I wouldn't call it an accident at all. An accident is when you slip on an icy road, or bump a car you didn't see when backing up. This was outright reckless driving. I got hit the same way, on the freeway, stopped in traffic. I was lucky that it was a lowered Civic that hit me and ended up going under my car.
Damn shame when someone loses their live because some idiot wasn't paying attention to the traffic ahead of them.

Everyone should also learn from this. Though many will deny it, a lot of members on AZ drive like idiots. Always try to improve on your driving no matter how many years you have driven or raced.
Be careful during New Years. Had a friend that is paralyzed from waist down because of a drunk driver. He's thankful because the family of 3 and 4 weren't so lucky.

I wish people would take driving much more seriously, focus on the road, drive at a speed that conditions permit & keep their road rage in check. I highly doubt the kid in the SUV was on his cell or texting, probably just driving like an A'hole with the: "I care about nobody & I'm more important" attitude. A very sad situation that could have been prevented. As it is the p.o.s driver will get only a speeding & reckless driving ticket, his insurance company will pay out a settlement & he'll be out driving again in a month or two with another vehicle his insurance company buys. Within a short time he'll forget he killed a child & resume to his poor driving habits. I cannot imagine losing any of my two children who are 18 & 19, let alone losing a 5 yr old who may have only just started school. Can you imagine talking to your son or daughter in the back seat one minute? Them Laughing? Smiling? Checking on them with a quick glance in the rear view mirror? Then the next second they are taken away? HORRIBLE

I'm interested in finding out the results of the investigation related to whether or not the kid was texting at the time of the accident. If he was, you can bet charges of Vehicular Manslaughter will be filed.

On more than one occasion i've seen people not paying attention that traffic has come to a complete stop on the freeway, followed by screeching tires and smoke.
The dude was still going at a high enough rate of speed to push 4 cars..texting may very well be involved unless the kid's blind as a bat.

Very sad. I encounter stopped traffic on the highway almost every day. I am always looking in my rear view to make sure traffic is slowing down behind me. I also tap my brakes to get other drivers attention and let them know traffic is slowing down.

It looks like the rear subframe was untouched. That jeep basically hit the upper sheetmetal. The rims and tires of the TL look fine even though the sheetmetal above was destroyed. The jeep rode up over all of the stronger structural members of the TL. It looks like the flimsy deck lid, fenders, and floorpan took the impact.

Have no idea if it would have made a difference in this case, but I lament the fact that driver's ED is no longer required and no longer even offered as an elective in most high schools.
It saddens me to see some of the crappy teen drivers on the road today who only learned enough to pass the driving test and then they are on their own. Five to ten years later, they're still the crappy, reckless drivers they started out to be...and shortly they will be setting an example for their offspring....
Driving is a privilege, not a right. The states don't do enough to keep bad drivers off the road, period. We just had a guy wind up in the river last week. Fourth DUI in three years, second incident resulting in injury to another...22 years old... Class A misdemeanor... Can you friggin believe that?

Ugh, this is so sad I feel horrible for this family I couldnt even imagine. It makes me even realize more now that we have our own little daughter. Im not going to comment on what happened, but for the most part I agree with what others have said. Hitting a car that hard requires some negligence on their part and thats not even getting into the whole texting thing or any other distraction.
Even though nothing this Devin kid does can bring back Jake, I seriously hope that he pays for what he did, he ruined a family :-(

I completely agree with you. I had no idea that the driving portion of driver's ed is gone. Drivers are worse now than ever. No respect, no courtesy, and no skill. Cars these days also allow bad drivers to get by with wreckless driving by saving their asses due to the electronics most of the time. But when they finally have a wreck it's usually bad.
The state or the judge that let that guy off after his 4th DUI should be held liable when he injures the next person in his next DUI (because there will be one for sure).
I'm constantly getting pissed at bad drivers. I try to mind my own business but it's hard. People can judge me and I try not to do it anymore but I have no problem following them to their destination and letting them know what I think of the crappy driving. People who have no problem cutting me off and laughing about it all of a sudden have respect when we're face to face.

^ agreed. Following someone to their destination and exchanging words face to face is just asking for it.

I wish the police would enforce ALL mv laws, my friend who is a NJ cop told me they really only enforce the speed limits, why? because it's proven guilty by radar/laser & difficult to dispute in court. What about tailgating & aggressive driving? Not enforced that much, the cop has to witness it then has to go to court & testify etc. The cop usually has to get paid by the town he/she works for to appear in court & testify because the person who got the ticket has hired a lawyer, towns don't have the $$ to pay cops court time & tie up the court with theses cases. Speeding tickets generate INSTANT $$, they are resolved within minutes of the person appearing in court, GUILTY, pay your fine & out the door, NEXT CASE.
Remember one thing while driving, you're gonna get cut off by other drivers, tailgated etc, it makes no sense to get upset. I've realized that me giving the finger to another driver & yelling isn't going to change their poor driving habits. They've been driving that way for years & won't change. The only thing we can do is drive defensively. As a 26 year motorcyclist I have a tip, when approaching a side street and there is a vehicle waiting to pull out DON'T look at the driver, DON'T look at the vehicle, LOOK at the front wheels, they will be the first part of a vehicle that you will see move. If you see the wheels start moving get ready to apply your brakes. If you watch only the driver you'll never see the vehicle pull out.
