RX-8 vs Maxima

Ran into a RX-8 with exhaust on the highway earlier today. He pulled up next to me at around 65 mph and downshifted. As soon as I downshifted to 3rd he hit it and got maybe a bumper worth of jump before I was at WOT. I stayed on it until I saw 110mph and had 3-4 cars on him. They seem pretty slow

Amen, those things shine in the twisties. I watched my cousin's s2k run through a canyon with one of those, they're both amazing in regards to handling capability.

Yeah they are sick in the circuit tracks but IMO 16-18MPG city is so not worth it if your going to get spanked by a family sedan.

I wish haha. At least then I'd know why, I'm shifting at like 2500-2750 and coasting most of the time. If I was going WOT, I'd be ok with it but right now I'm getting punished for nothing. lol

when i bought my tl i was lookin at an 8...what i liked was,
1) it looked hot in black
2) great handling
3) 6spd manual
4) RWD

Dislikes
1) pretty much a 2 seater
2) the rotaries in them suck
3) lack of power stock
4) reliability...(see #2)

someone once said to me..."if you love rotaries, get the 8. but if you loved rotaries you would go near an 8"

Yeah my car is only setup to go straight well and stop well atm. I guess it would handle ok because of wide sticky tires alone but I'd want to pick up a few key suspension components before trying to keep up with a RX-8 around twisties.

I fit in the back seat of the Rx-8's pretty good with plenty of room, I'm 6ft. Not to many other cars can get away with that, and also get around a race track as fast as they do.
Why do you say reliability is bad? You know this from personal experience? Or are you just repeating intronet gossip? The renesis has come along way since the early engines of the 70's. From what I can tell these cars are just as fast stock(1/4 mile) as a comparable s2000,350z,acura tl etc..14 seconds.

LOL you posted in other threads you trap a 107mph in the 1/4 mile. Also you beat your buddies cobalt that ran a 13.0 at 113-14 mph. I know he probably instigated the race and had it coming. Yet you still decided to race a stock RX-8 that runs high 14's and then say it's slow. Why don't you go race something a little more equal to your car? Maybe a C5 vette or 03+ cobra.

My room mate's car could race a c5 vette or 03-04 cobra stockish. On street tires the best I've run is 13.2@107.5 and stock vettes/cobras can do high 12s and trap higher. I can badly beat the cobalt if I spray or run slicks at the track.

I need a power adder, probably another nitrous setup. With a 125 shot I could trap around 116-117mph and maybe hit high 11s. I'd have a shot at racing modded LS1 cars and turbo hondas on the street (from a roll)!

How does a car that traps 107mph compare to a C5 or a Cobra? I trap around 108-110 and I dont even compare...

I'm sure I'd beat a RX-8 handily on most of the twisty roads around these parts. At least on the uphill sections

Well he says he's faster than 13.0, so....so actually he should be right next to a stock C5 or 03 cobra(high 12's low 13's). I bet a RX-8 stock for stock against your caddy, would put up a pretty good fight in a tight road course, for a car half the price and less than half the power.

If my clutch were in good condition and Cutout or Open Y-pipe, I would probably be good for a 12.6-12.7 with a 108-109 trap. Right now I am shifting slow (slipping clutch) so I'd guess I'm a bit slower than normal. Plus even a 108-109 trap isn't fast enough for a bolton vette or terminator. I will need nitrous.

Let me spray and I may even take the caddy

Thanks. I hope it'll be a little faster when the clutch grabs all the way, although it did save me from spinning lol

I personally can vouch for their poor reliability. My best friend has an 04 8 6MT (which he purchased new) and it's pretty much been a headache for him throughout most of his ownership, with numerous repairs of various (fairly major) components.

As for their acceleration, AT BEST they may be as quick as a stock 5.5G Maxima 4AT but won't touch the latter when mods are in play. But in the 8's defense, they're designed moreso for handling than acceleration.

I definitely heard your clutch slipping a little bit. I'm sure that's hurting your 60' and some of your shifts. I know when I went to the track I F'ed up the launch bad (clutch) and shifted the 1-2 and it slipped like crazyyy; had to feather it. What I was happy about (tho I ran a crappy time) was that I trapped 77mph in the 1/8th due to clutch failure (as opposed to 80 on my best run) and only ended up being 0.8mph short in the 1/4 trap. My best trap is 100.82 (I/Jpipe) and I trapped 100.1 that day with my slipping clutch (I/E/Jpipe/Ported IM). So 3mph slower in the 1/8th but caught up significantly and was only 0.8mph slower in the 1/4. I don't know the math involved to see what my trap would have been by comparing how I caught up to almost even, but I'd guess a 2mph increase from my 100.8 trap with the addition of E/Ported IM based on what I saw.

So I know the effects a slipping clutch can have firsthand! And it sucks!

The rotary is like communism. The concept looks great on paper, but when applied to the real world, it simply doesn't work well. The reliability of the last generations of the rotary has been is horrible. The turbos liked to catch fire and ruin apex seals. The new rotary likes to guzzle oil, get flooded, and eat those apex seals. Then there's the mpg. Yeah, 15-16 around town and 19-20 on the highway. What? Maybe if the car ran deep 13s, I could accept it. However, it's a solid 14.7-15.0@94mph car with a pretty sad aftermarket.

Like I've been saying for years, Mazda should have scraped the rotary on the current gen RX. They should have swapped in the DISI turbo I4 from the Mazdaspeed cars and called it a day. An RX with the DISI would be a solid 13.7@104mph car. Yes, it would have added about 80lbs more weight to the front, but that could have been fixed somewhat a bit with moving the battery out back, adjusting the suspension setup, wheel/tire size, rollbars, etc. Apparently the next gen RX will be a rotary as well. Yeah, I know RX means rotary, but only 5% of the buying public knows this. Put a turbo I4 in it and no one would care except for a few thousand braindamaged rotary diehards.

sure would. look at the Mazdaspeed3 and how popular that is. I would be much more interested in a RX-8 without the rotary powerplant. It would actually have some torque to deal with!

Yeah RWD, lightweight and good looks go a long way. Just needed a good engine to push it along.

It would actually be able to compete with the other cars in its class as far as straighline performance goes. All Mazda has to do is look at the pontiac solstice and saturn sky. 260hp turbo 4 and RWD in a lightweight package!

Yep that's the same 4 cyl that's in my room mate's cobalt SS/TC. 350whp with boltons and tune is sweet!
