Question Royal Purple vs. Pennzoil new 5w-20 Synthetic? (RR)

I thought I saw something in one of your thread about your dislike of Royal Purple Road Rage. Would you care to elaborate on the the Royal Purple? Is the Pennzoil 5w-20 synthetic a good choice? I plan on changing my oil to synthetic soon, or do you like any other besides the LE or MC?

In case RR doesn't get a chance to see this (I can't imagine how many of these requests he gets) here is what you were looking for: RR's thoughts on Royal Purple and also More RR thoughts on RP

As for Pennzoil Syn, I've used the 10w30 version in our 2000 Accord V6 with only so so results. The OA was posted on BITOG if you're interested. Yes, it's an Accord, not a TL, but don't fool yourself. Even most of the snobs here will privately admit the family resemblance.

If you really want to know what RR thinks, I happen to know his garage is chok full of Halvoline 5w20 GF-4. Brilliant is as brilliant does.

I can't seem to find the Havoline 5w-20 anywhere. I looked at my local Walmart, K-Mart and auto-zone. Anyone know who stocks this stuff.
thanks!

I use penz syn 520...used penz syn for the last 6 years of my life...seem pretty happy with it, although i use it only because its what my shop stocks. we stocked castrol syn for a few months so my free oil changes were with that oil...since its free i cant really complain about the type of synthetic oil i use.

I have looked all over for it too. Looked in WallyMart, KMart, Schucks, Auto Zone, Pep Boys, and a couple of private places. No luck until today. Found it at G I Joes for $1.62 a quart. Be sure you get the GF-4, not the GF-3.

Thanks, Jack Sprat for summarizing my opinion of the great Barney oil, RP, Or is it RiP?

I find Havoline at AutoZone and Pep Boys here. Lots of it. Just make sure you get the GF-4 stuff - they move the old stock to the front of the racks - like milk.

i thought RR recommeded the use of 5w-30 over 5w-20 oil since 5w-20 has not been proven much.

I won't speak for RR, but I do know a lot more research has been done since and a lot more OA's have come in recently that look pretty good for 5w-20. As time passes, products prove themselves and recommendations evolve accordingly as they can only be based on a snapshot in time.

Well, in Royal Purple Synthetic 5w-30 defense, I've used it for over 100k miles in my Pontiac Grand Prix. It has over 175k miles on the odometer and doesn't use oil on a modified engine. I do 7500 miles intervals.

I have used Mobil 1, Texaco Synthetic, Castrol Syntec and Pennzoil along the way trying them at one time or another. My car has run cooler with the Royal Purple. I say all that about my Pontiac. Now my TL is a different story and I was looking for suggestions whether to try Royal Purple 5W-20 or Pennzoil synthetic or maybe some other brand. I'm sure any good premium oil will do, but I'm looking for thoughts from some of you who have looked at grade of oils to my a final decision.

I currently using Castrol 5w-20 dino in the 2004 TL. My third oil change is coming up this weekend.

I'm looking for facts and not feelings on the Royal Purple.

Thanks in advance

Nah, I wouldn't use either one. They are better alternatives in terms of proven performance, price, and avaliability. (RP) PZ is just overpriced for a very average Group III Synthetic.

I'd rather use M1 5w-20, Amsoil XL-7500 5w-20 (excellent performance), or just a conventional Havoline 5w-20 mixed with Lube Control.

Where did you NOT see facts? Feelings? I take it back, for you I recommend Royal Purple at 20k intervals. Sounds like the perfect oil for your application.

BITOG This is one of the facts that I was speaking of. One size certainly doesnt fit all, and I will not claim that. I just know that my car has several mile on the engine, and has been down the 1/4 mile track a few times all on the same OEM engine with a few goodies.

I only hope the TL will put up with half and do just as well. Miles on the odometer is my gauge. Keep the jokes coming Jack.

I still waiting to see the result on the GF-4 groups of oils and the effects on the TL engine over the long haul.

Yes, that's right - I still would use a 30w in extremely hot climates, or if towing, but for day to day average use, the UOA's I have seen, coupled with advances in the 5w20 formulations for GF-4, have made me reconsider their use, and support them. I am not rigid in my thinking, although my knees are.

I'm leary of some of the test I see. I know you can send the same oil to two or three different labs and come up with different results even if they are all independent.

Independent labs are offen contracted by several major firms to do there analysis

After further review, and a visit to my local walmart, I see that most major brands now meet the SM, GF4 specs.

On avg. most people own there car for 60-80k miles. So ANY major brand on regular oil change interval will be fine.

OK whats regular? Our cars our life gauges are fine.

Oils have came a long ways and will only get better.

So I will say not to get caught up into which brand is better threads, but just to service your car when needed and you will be fine.

Up here in Maryland, Walmart now carries Castrol Syntec and Mobil-1 in 5W-20.

from my usage, most oils are blends, royal purple makes two types, ones a blend and ones pure, its call racing 11 the pure one
and i have used redline, both great
but my use is a fully blown mustang
for a car like ours you dont need to spend the extra money cause your engine will never make that kind of heat or stress
walmart mobil one is good to,its 20.00 for a 5 quart jug

remember our cars dont need it but it doesnt hurt its only money
one the same page all you auto trans guys put the redline in your tranny for more life due to less heat and fritcion

my 2 cents is not to use it over 7500 miles, its better to be safe then sorry
stang had to be change every 3000 miles per vortechs supercharger warranty
lots of bakin heat from the big blow dryer
lol
hope this helps

just wondering... with the 5w-20 oils, is the standard oil filter sufficient or should it replaced with something else?

I would go with the Honda filter made by Filtech, the Honda by Toyo Roki, Mobil 1, or Purolater Pure One. Any of those would be pretty adequate. Amsoil has a good filter also, but it is a little pricey.

What's the opinion on the Motor Craft 5-20 SynBlend?
I've been using it for the past two oil changes.

It's still a very good dino oil. That's what I have in my car now. Havoline or Chevron Supreme are also good bets.

I'm back everyone.

I seriously have NO problems with using Royal Purple Racing 21, except for the fact that I can find oils just as good for much less. From the limited UOAs that I've seen, the results were excellent for that particular application.

Here are some EXCELLENT reports on LATE MODEL cars using Royal Purple Racing 21. In both of these applications, the owners received guidiance with expert Terry Dyson and the results were excellent.

RP Racing 21 in 04 4Runner

RP Racing 21 in WRX

The RP that I was speaking of was there regular synthetic, and not there racing type.

I will repeat what I said earlier about lube olis of all types

After further review, and a visit to my local walmart, I see that most major brands now meet the SM, GF4 specs.

Anything else is just hype. 99% of the cars we all see on the road either pick a major brand or go with whatever there dealer recommends. Most car don't have lubrication failure, its normally some else. So I will just pick a good brand and stick with it.
