it's the cats.. when you floor it.. then let off, there is a large change in exhaust as the engine is coming down from it's WOT mixture and it's blowing that thru the cats. It only does it once you let off after driving it like the devil. Mine did it from new for about 2 or so months and has never come back. I've used QT, Shell, Chevron, and Philips66 gas and it has never returned.

The A/C I guess I never notice cuz I always leave the climate control on 99% of the time.. sometimes, during those 2 days a year when georgia isn't winter (20 or 30 degrees) or summer (90 degrees) I can open the windows and turn the climate off, but that only lasts a day. Car fogs up if I don't have the climate on auto.

addendum: if the smell does not go away after a few months, I would definately have it checked. With the occurances of bad o2 sensors in this vehicle, the car could be running outside of its optimal state. Accompanying this would be lower than normal fuel economy.

So what does that TSB say? Does it explain why?

Thanks.

Pop mechanics just reported that one was issued for the rotten egg smell in the 02-04 RSX which may require replacment of the cat, along with some fixes for seals in the trunk for a musty smell.

No other specifics were given.

I always drive with the fresh air intake closed to prevent the exhaust smell from entering. Recently, on a cool evening I opened the vent and the smell was terrible. More embarassing, I had a friend with me. It was just after starting the vehicle and had nothing to do with CAT CON (totally different smell) Smelled like a rotten egg farted after eating cheeze. Taking it into the shop next week.

I almost wonder if it's related to the earlier builds with the faulty O2 sensors and the old ECU programming. Anyone having it that's say.. a 30,xxx or greater vin ??

It won't - sulfur in fuel is a reality, and not going away. The catalytic converter will hold some of the unburnt sulfur. That is not going away. When the cat heats up from a burst of acceleration, or a long idle time, the sulfur will burn off. That is not going away.

I haven't noticed this on my TL but my 04 Trailblazer had this H2S odor pretty bad. It now has 15,000 miles and the odor seems to have disappeared.

I remember in high school chemistry there was an experiment the class did each year. Don't remember what it was, but it emitted the hydrogen sulfide odor that went all over the school building. I think the teacher really enjoyed smelling up the whole school building.

Maybe he had just eaten a burrito, or even worse, a bad clam. The experiment was a masking device.

I have this smell now. I didnt have it before. I just got the car back from the dealer and it smells bad. I am afraid the dealer messed up my in-cabin filter. I will have to check it again to make sure.

You guys are crazy breathing life into this old thread! But I am glad of one thing, if I get gassed up and need to explode in the car with the gf, I know I can go quietly and blame it on the cat! Then if she refutes it, as I know she will, I can come on here and show her all this technical shit to prove it!

Thanks again AZ!! Always there for me!

Nope. I also remember when they sold smokes right outside by the pumps, had full service gas (I know some states still do), and battleship was a cool game....oh ya....and stretch Armstrong was back in those days too I think that the kids used to play with...lol.
